Last self propelled Budd?

All this about DMUs makes me ask when was the last self propelled Budd car train in the Boston area?

I not 100% sure but 1982 sticks in my mind. I believe in 1980 a bunch were de-engined and in 1982 Morrison-Knudsen converted some to coaches and cab cars. The de-engined retained their distinctive radiator hump while the M-K units were flat-topped. I'm sure someone has an exact date.

I don't have an answer to the original question off the top of my head, except that I recall it as being an ex-PC car running on the South Side, but on a related note the last of the MBTA's non-Boise-rebuilt RDCs weren't stricken from the active roster until late 1989. By that time the ones that were left had all been running with locomotive power rather than self-propulsion. In the mid-1980s the MBTA had actually added to its RDC fleet with purchases of cars from CP and SEPTA and a lease of additional cars from New Jersey Transit.

The last self-propelled RDCs I recall in regular service were a pair used as the Back Bay - South Station shuttle during the SW Corridor construction. 1982 is about right, but I'm not the one to ask about an absolute "last day" - I was riding SS - 128 regularly (via the Midland) but not spending a lot of time checking out other lines or the North Side.

So Doug killed the last Budd Cars … Wonder if he will do the same for Acela Express? :)

Seriously, I do recall 6134 and most of the New Haven cars lasting a little longer than the average B&M Budd. I would bet that 6212 was the last RDC-2

The next stop is Washington. Change for Forest Hills Trains on the Winter St. Platform, and Everett Trains on the Summer St. Platform. This is an Ashmont train, change for Braintree at Columbia.
