As it was told to me the T wanted to get more but UTA didn't want to part with anymore. I'm interested to see what the numbers are now for spare locos, I know it can't be good.

This. But I'm not sure why. UTA didn't have sell them -- they could have rented them to us until they need them.

We need all the engines we could get. On top of that, winter is a very bad time of year for engine shortages.

Is the t still paying the lease on locos now that they're dead?

No they only pay when the locos are used in service.

When they were rented the GP40MC's were still in top-deck overhaul, and OOS in larger numbers. Right now only 1122 (out since Oct.), 1131 (out since Oct.), and 1139 (out since Dec.) are OOS for the HEP replacement program; they're the only unavailable locos NETransit is currently listing. I don't know how many they're rotating at a time for the HEP program, but the state of affairs with the OOS roster is way better than it was a couple years ago.

How old and tired were these units when the T got them from MARC? None of the T's locos are spring chickens (except 010 and 011) and and they seem to have been more reliable than the MARC units over the same time frame.

The 010 and 011 were brand spanking new engines vs the MARC units which were built over 20 yrs ago so there is no comparison.

He was saying except 010 and 011, the MBTA fleet is about the same age. I think. I'm not sure if that's correct or not. Based on performance, I'd think the MARC units were much older than anything else the T is using.

The MARC Geeps were rebuilt in 1993 (old, but not ancient)), but were rebuilt from GP40s. The GP40MC's were rebuilt from newer GP-40-2W's, so both their rebuild date and original build date is more recent.

I guess we'll know if things are really bad if we see one of these dead units being used as a HEP generator behind 3247. (I wouldn't suggest that if there wasn't that spell where the gensets and even the leased P&W B23-7 got used in revenue service! ;-) )
Wondering if I'll see the Haverhill double-tracking finished before I retire...

Yes looking back I think that's what he intended to say.

How crazy was that timeframe LOL! Bet you won't see that on any other railroad, don't expect to see that again with one of the gensets making its permanent home in the shop and no leased P&W units this year... I'd expect to see the junk ex MARC units exchanged for working ones over the non passenger units put in service. Hey at least next winter will be better with new units on property (hopefully)

As a railfan, certainly interesting wondering what's going to be on the head end each night. I saw the P&W unit at NS, but never rode a trip behind it.

The commuter in me will be glad to see the new stuff though!

Were the two MARCs that were being spruced up ("use it or lose it") pressed into service today? I saw a picture of two MARCs supposedly hauling a set today. Great to see them running and helping the T with extra service if true.

Can anyone confirm?
