Another one of my whacky rebuilding ideas. Ship the 61 and 67 along with the 1118 to Altoona. 1118 will get the standard top-deck, new HEP unit, and the like. Turn the two MARC Units into GP40ECO-H2 units, rebuild from the frame and give them EMD 12-710ECO prime movers, Caterpillar HEP units, and repaint them into the lightning stripe, then bam! We have some more *rebuilt GP40 power with *new primemovers until the HSPs arrive, and will last after the screamers are phased out. Ditto on the 51, 59 and 66, and any other MARC GP40s laying around that could be used. Anyone care to photoshop a GP40WH-2 in the lightning stripe scheme to see what these hypothetical locomotives would look like???

Aren't the MARC units going back because the T refused to pay any more to lease them? Where are they going to come up with millions for what you suggest?

The MBTA decided not to renew the lease at the beginning of the winter, and the MBCR picked up the tab. Now some of the units are leaving, while others are staying on an as-needed basis.

Rebuilding the MARC units is out because major elements including the frame and trucks are worn out - you'd have to replace almost the entire locomotive.

The three remaining MARC units were moved at some point yesterday. One of the units was on the 'load test box' behind the diesel house. Not sure where the other two were moved to. It appears that either the T or MBCR has renewed the lease.

I'd expect them going after the first group of the HSP46s arrives... Figure they'll keep em' around while the doyen of the class undergoes testing.

The previous post is so unintelligible - I have no idea what the point is, however, the lease has been re-negotiated and 51-59-66 will be sticking around for awhile. 66 was pulled outside this afternoon and is presumably ready to go back in the lineup. 51 may have a problem with one of the heads, but that is just rumor right now and 59 was sidelined due to the repeated popping of the low water button and has yet to be brought in for a look-see.

From an engineer that I know-He/she told me the 59 blew a crankcase in its prime mover.

Saw a train from North Station outbound to Lowell on Saturday (from the timing, after 8pm, it was train 1313) operating with what looked like 2 ex-MARC locos. Why?

There is at least 1 required Double-Header consist that lays over in East Fitchburg every night. The 2 GP40WH-2s might be just a coincidence.

One of the units is having some issues, so they are doubled up for some testing of it's repair.

There is another two loco set with two screamers for the Fitchburg Line. MARC units are not supposed to put up outside of Boston(it does happen) because of an issue with the layover power stations we have.

Had to dig deep to find this thread (all the way to page 2 :-).

Ex-MARC 51 was spotted running (well, at least smoking!) on the load test box at BET this morning as I came in on 352. First sign of life in quite a while out of either 51 or 59.
Wondering if I'll see the Haverhill double-tracking finished before I retire...

Im almost positive the 59 will not be returning to service(missing several parts, prime mover had a major failure, has been sitting for an extended period of time, etc; but the 51 can probably come back since it doesn't have any major prime mover failures as far as I know.

The 51 caught fire today at North Station, I have not received too much info on this incident but I will learn more tomorrow.

Main generator fire, I wouldn't expect to see that one running for sometime if ever again on our property unless the other dead one at BET has a good one! Can't say that I'm sad to see it go either...

Now we are back to all three of them being out of service. We should have gotten more MP36s when we had the chance.
