Electric Locomotive Operations at Penn Station c. 1952

Postby andrewdpudelek » Sun Oct 12, 2014 9:08 pm

Does anyone know about the operations of locomotives at New York Pennsylvania Station around 1952? The types of locomotives, their usage, and their storage? I know that the GG-1 was obviously prevalent, but what other locomotives were used there? Switchers? Road engines? Did Sunnyside Yard store all locomotives or did some layover in the station? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Reasonably certain that during the early 50's, pairs of DD-1's in PRR and LIRR service would have still been on the property. Of course, the GG-1 would have been the big boy on the block, and the DD's were being phased out.

Would the DD-1's be powered by third rail or would any be converted to overhead catenary power?

I worked there in 1957 and DD1s worked the wire train on third trick. You could de-energize the overhead wire and they ran off the third rail.
All the New Haven passenger motors came through the station.

LIRR DD1s quit running to Penn Station in 1951, wasn't it? On scheduled trains anyway. To the west, third rail ended just west of the tunnels... since the 1930s?

I did some research on the DD-1 at the library; seems that they were gone by 1951... Missed it by a year. What about other Pennsy electrics?

The PRR and LIRR still had various types of 6 wheel electric switchers using DC 3rd rail or AC catenary. Some may have been used in Penn Station. At least 1 DD-1 set lasted into PennCentral, to run the wire train after 1951. That's how it survived long enough to get into the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

I think they were all in freight service by that time, but don't know for sure.
