New LV caboose survivor found!

Postby scottychaos » Mon Jan 01, 2007 2:44 pm

I just saw this posted on the ARHS yahoo forum,
definately a LV caboose!
and I dont think its on the survivor list:

http://gold.mylargescale.com/Scottychao ... umber.html

I googled it, found several pics, it clearly still exists.
but I cant find out what LV number it is..
anyone have any records of LV cabeese going to the CNW or UP?
apparently it went to the CNW or UP via PC.

probably went to CNW from PC back when PC was still around,
and then became a UP caboose after UP absorbed the CNW.

Scot, I show the following LV cabs going to CNW:
95012 - CNW 10800, later to Hill City SD
95029 - CNW 10801
95044 - CNW 10802
95049 - CNW 10803, scrapped 1970
95051 - CNW 10804, destroyed in wreck
95057 - CNW 10805, scrapped 1970
95081 - CNW 10806, scrapped
95120 - CNW 10807, scrapped 1963?
95129 - CNW 10808, retired 8-89
95138 - CNW 10809

I consolidated information from several sources to make my list so I can't give proper credit for where that came from, sorry. I also can't guarantee it's 100% accurate - but it's a start. Maybe you can eliminate some of those by checking the end windows - looks like the one in the photo used to have 2 rectangular ones.

The CNW 10800 (1) at Hill City is a wood, drover caboose, NOT the ex-LV.

Here's CNW 10800 painted as UP for use in a movie filming:

LV sold cabooses to PC, C&NW and Rock Island (among others) when they became surplus in the late 60's. You'll want to dig out the old RMC 2-part article on these cars (I want to say March 1982 is one of the issues) for more details on where the cars went.

Here are comments from a listing compiled by Mark Landgraf and John Koehler, 4/1/98, and some newer information from my own notes:

Sold to CNW 5/28/65:
95012 - CNW 10800, used as a CNW yard office by '69, scrapped 6/22/72.
95029 - CNW 10801, retired '83, 1 square window.
95044 - CNW 10802, 2 round round windows.
95049 - CNW 10803, scrapped '70, 2 round windows.
95051 - CNW 10804, destroyed in wreck, 1 square window.
95057 - CNW 10805, scrapped '70, 1 square window.
95081 - CNW 10806, retired 11/21/68, 1 square window, scrapped?
95120 - CNW 10807, 2 round windows, scrapped 1968?
95129 - CNW 10808, retired 8/89, 2 round windows.
95138 - CNW 10809, 2 round windows, *photo* in RMC, Aug.'82, p. 83.

One of the above is at the End of the Line Vacation Station, *perhaps* 10801, 10804, or 10805?

Note that the window listings are "as built" and some cars had a window(s) added at a later date.

I just got the heritage of this caboose! :)

I just received an email from a Gentleman who works for the UP in MOW service,
informing me he has worked with the caboose mentioned above for decades!
and he knows the history of his caboose! She is LV 95138.

LV 95138 was one of ten sold to the C&NW in the 1960s.
was then numbered CNW 10809, and painted yellow with green cupola.
renumbered for MoW to CNW 261531 pained gray with red ends.
now in UP MoW green still numbered CNW 261531, used daily with American 5030 series loco crane # 262067 out of West Chicago ILL.

check it out!

I will add her to the list! :)

That would pretty much be the last LV caboose, and the last Northeastern type caboose, in service for a class 1, correct? Didn't CSX retire the last former Conrail one (ex-RDG) several years ago (and it went to the WNY NRHS in Buffalo, or someone else in Buffalo, because that's where it last ran)?

yes! very likely..
its the only known LV caboose in Class-1 service..
I dont know if there is a list of surviving RDG or WM Northeastern cabooses anywhere..
but the odds of any of them still in class-1 service are pretty slim.
