Mechanicville-Oneonta rail miles?

Postby SSW9389 » Tue Jun 18, 2013 8:56 am

What is the distance by rail between Mechanicville and Oneonta? On page 254 of Centennial Remembrance it says that the FA-1 demonstrators made 13,400 miles between these points in 1946.

I used the ruler feature on google earth, and plotted the route right on the tracks..I got 86 miles one-way.

For the FA's, that works out to 156 one-way trips,
or 78 round trips.

I found a 1954 OGR I had and worked out that it is 101 rail miles between the two points.

Per CP's Northeast US Service Area Employee Timetable of 2005, Oneonta is at mp CPF-554.3 while the east end of Mechanicville is at mp CPF-467.4 where Pan Am ownership begins. Net distance would be about 87 miles.

How does CP come up with their mileage numbering system? I'm assuming that the numbers run along the entire Sunbury Sub from the Canadian border to Sunbury. This pic I took about 1/2 mile south of Nanticoke PA shows the milepoint as 696.65:

That would make it 142 miles from Oneonta (southwest). The milepost at the Canadian border would be something
like 300 if you subtract 167 from the 467 at Mechanicville.
My question is where do the first 300 miles come from, Toronto or somewhere else in Canada?

The mileposts between Mechanicville and Sunbury were assigned at the time when Guilford owned the D&H prior to sale to CP. Guilford set milepost 0 for its so-called "Freight Mainline" at Mattawamkeag, ME, its easternmost point and continued numbering across B&M and D&H properties to Sunbury PA.
