I was told by a tour guide when i was to the B&O Museum in 2002 , that # 580 was being scraped when they relized that they were doing a great wrong so they put her back together what was still whole and sent her to the museum.

The only Camelback that I know of ever went to its new location under its own power was Ex. Reading 1187 now known as Strasburg # 4 . which some day might feel fire in her fire box once more .

The CNJ 4-4-2C camelback steamer in the B&O railroad museum is number 592. Photos at: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/cnj/cnj-s592.jpg and http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/tr_cnj592.jpg The first photo was taken in the museum, and the second was taken while en-route to the museum.

Ok there both nice pictures of the CNJ camelback , but you can see in the #2 pic, that the locomotive is not under its own power . the ecentry rod is disconected . Also check out this website , and scroll to the bottom and you will see that same pictures in b/w of May 1, 1954 with CNJ 1000 and 592 and one coach, in dead tow to the museum.

IIRC the National Museum of Transport in Saint Louis has a CNJ geep. Do they have a camelback ? Are any of the 2500 series SD-35's extant ?

CNJ GP7 #1520 is in St. Louis. I think it's painted for conrail, but it's there nonetheless.

There aren't any SD35s left, they're all subarus and razorblades :(

RS3 #1546 is in Northampton PA on the Northampton Development Corp. line. It was re-engined by conrail with an EMD engine.

RS3 #1548 was in southern NJ until a few years ago, I think it's now owned by Andrew Merillees Leasing of canada.

CSX 8800 series SD40-2's have been showing up in Lansdale, PA as the road power for the daily C846 runs. This was necessitated by Septa's ongoing cab signal project and the fact that these units still have their cab signals. We'll keep an eye out for 8878/8885 and post if they happen to show up. The current 8858/8881 combo is probably coming up for their 91 day inspections and may be swapped out. There's a few leasers that have made it up this way was well but they've probably had their CS equipment removed.

What color are the FURX units? I may have seen some on the BNSF out here.

CSXT 8885, nee CR 6999, 6290, neee CNJ 3066 arrived in Lansdale, PA this week. If it follows the standard pattern, it should be there for at least a couple of weeks and will be used on the overnight C746 runs between Lansdale and South Philly.

Might be a good chance to see this rare unit in the area.

3069 to EL shops Hornell, in line to be rebuilt as EL 3000; retained by EL Estate 4/1/76; sold to Milwaukee Road; subsequently sold to KCS; carcass finally scrapped. Trucks probably still exist.

Biggest spotting feature on these ex-B&O SD40s is the brakewheel on the long hood end.

Be sure not to confuse any of the power on the SRRNJ, which uses the same herald, with actual CNJ units.

CNJ was turned down for financing GP38s and bought used RDG RS2s in about 1972, or we might have more existing units running around. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more EMD or Alco switchers out there no one is aware of yet.

As long as this is also the L&NE board, there is one L&NE engine remaining, an Alco S1, now near Anderson Indiana at a grain elevator. I've seen the unit in person and the L&NE striping is visible on the hood sides. I'm not sure what the number is - 581? 281? Something like that. It has friction bearings and thin wheels and would need to leave on a flatcar or on roller trucks to go to a museum - if someone has the bucks to pick up a good running U23B or B23-7, they'd probably swap for it. The unit it replaced, a Plymouth industrial engine, was shoved out to the end of track and left to rot and be vandalized. With scrap prices up, that may not happen a second time.

Well, CSXT 8885 didn't last long in Lansdale. It was swapped out late last week. Rumor had it that new cab signals were recently installed so maybe it was just up here to test in Septaland. Its' reassignment may have also not been a bad thing as C746 dropped four cars on the ground in Norristown, PA this morning although the locos did stay on the rails.
