Did BN ever have a GE 25 tonner?

Postby BN2513GP35 » Thu May 28, 2009 4:15 pm

While you wouldn’t think that a class 1 railroad like BN would have a GE 25-ton, I just stumbled across a picture of a GE 25-ton with a BN paint scheme but which was lettered for a leasing company.

Given how most leasing companies don’t bother to repaint the engines they acquire (choosing instead to simply re-letter them), and it is unlikely that a leasing company would repaint an engine to look like it belonged to another railroad, I assume that this engine once belonged to BN.

That being said, I can find no record of a GE 25-ton in any of my engine rosters…

Do any of you know if the engine in the photo was once operated by BN and, if not, why it is sporting BN colors?

I saw that picture earlier and thought that it could have been BN also.

It could have come from a railroad that just used the paint scheme.

It could be a railroad that just wanted to honor the BN.
"Why would you take a train to go see another train?"
Some people just don't understand.

You'd be surprised what sort of weird industrial switchers you can find on Class I's.

These in particular are pretty bizarre so the idea of BN having an industrial switcher isn't that much of a stretch.

Was never BN:

Although in a BN paint scheme it was never on the BN roster. It is lettered for Smith Brothers which is a locomotive dealer. On the builder plate on side of cab was "Class b-50/50-16E733" and 31790. Unit is lettered for Smith Brothers.
