Train POSP

Postby roberttosh » Wed Aug 31, 2016 5:31 pm

Am curious what this train carried to Springfield. Seems that CR blocked cars out of Portland would have moved on POSE to Rotterdam Jct/Sekirk. Did it perhaps carry New England or even Oak Point, NY bound CR traffic that didn't need to go all the way out to Selkirk and back that was instead classed at West Springfield and forwarded directly to places like New Haven, Readville and Framingham? Any insight would be appreciated.

I believe that POSP was a TOFC train. The photo below would seem to confirm that. I do not see a date or credit on the photo.

Here's another copy of the same photo with a date of 8/21/79 by William Rogerson

Am pretty sure I've seen photos of that train with general freight and if you look past the TOFC cars there does seem to be some boxcars in that picture. Maybe for a time it was a solid TOFC train or combo job? Thanks!

POSP carried CR bound pigs (better access to the Trailvan network) plus general freight billed via the Springfield gateway which was mostly stuff moving in the remnants of the B&M-NH tariffs that used to go thru Worcester. So, yes, Cedar Hill, Oak Point and LIRR traffic was a big part of the mix but Pot Yard destined stuff moved too. Post-staggers they consolidated interchange at Rotterdam. The symbol came about after a car movement study found out how many cars were needlessly being switched at ED when Rigby could block.

See you at NEARS. :-D
