Wilmington Newark line is suspended. Norfolk Southern's freight train had 2 car derailments at Crum Lynne

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/train ... 80503.html

Philadelphia Inquirer wrote:The derailment involved an 88-car freight train that was carrying crushed stone from Birdsboro, Pa., and Edgemoor, Del., and pulled by two Norfolk Southern locomotives, a railroad spokesman said.

The last two cars of train derailed and one of them tipped over, spilling its load, about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday between SEPTA’s Eddystone and Crum Lynne Stations Wednesday, officials said."

SEPTA as of 12:30 is still suspending service on the Wilmington Newark line, Amtrak is back up and running on a limited schedule. Extra trains on the R3 Media/Elwyn will be provided per SEPTA Twitter

Any idea on when normal service will resume? I saw 4 weeks per May 3rd but we are closing in on that fast with no word from septa.

Around 4:20pm today train 6313 had a minor rear-end collision with a Newark bound train at Temple University. Southbound rush hour trains were affected

Wasn't PTC supposed to prevent these types of collisions?

Apparently PTC doesn’t work at slow speeds as told by Jeff Knueppel in this news story.

http://www.philly.com/philly/business/t ... ?mobi=true

He states the PTC system “ignores” slow speed trains for “maintenance reasons” but didn’t really expound on it.

I suppose 2 years from now, the NTSB will have the official report available on this incident

There was a rear-ender in Wales some years ago involving two 2-car diesel mu trains, one of which was leaving while the one behind it was arriving -- fully according to the rules, restricted speed, and so forth. As the lead train departed, a passenger was seen running along the platform waving his arms, and since this was a rural part of Wales and the next train was several hours later, the driver of the lead train stopped for him. The writer of the report commented that "dmus don't have brake lights," and since both trains were moving slowly it was not apparent that the lead train was slowing down instead of accelerating until it was too late for the following train to stop in time. This seems like just the thing that could happen at Temple or any other Center City station. And putting in a special instruction that a train is not permitted to stop once in motion might seem rather draconian, since hourly headways are common on SEPTA outside peak hours.

Some kind of equipment trouble on the Trenton line near the Zoo.

Channel 6 reported that some passengers have been emailing they were stuck on a dead train (aka no A/C). Chopper 6 showed people changing trains and walking between tracks.

Trains behind that train are also being cancelled.

Paoli/Thorndale service is a bit wonky today. As I understand it, a tree fell around Malvern station, so there is a bus shuttle between Malvern and Paoli. Trains are running hourly until 5:00 PM.

Really bad delays yesterday because of the snowstorm.
Rode train 568 which as 16 minutes late coming to 30th street and by the time we got to Lansdale, the train was over 30 minutes late and I could see the light from the train behind us around Gwynedd Valley.
