SL Vs and Comet IBs

Postby NortheastTrainMan » Sun Jun 01, 2008 6:11 pm

does anyone know how the orders are coming along?

Also are the AEM-7s and the ALP-44 compatible with the Comet IB?

I can't see any reason why the Comet IB's wouldn't be compatible, but somebody else may be able to confirm.
Why doesn't the Cash for Clunkers program apply to the ancient Silverliner II/III's? Because even THEY get better than 18 mpg.

SEPTA Won't Get New Rail Cars for Months
Posted: February 29th, 2008 10:43 AM EDT

By Paul Nussbaum, staff writer, The Philadelphia Inquirer

New SEPTA Regional Rail cars will be at least four months late, delaying relief for riders on the increasingly crowded rail lines, SEPTA officials said yesterday.

SEPTA has granted Rotem USA Corp. an extension until April 2009 to deliver the first three Silverliner V railcars because of steel shortages and the bankruptcy of a communications equipment supplier, said Patrick Nowakowski, chief operations officer.

That will mean delivery of the rest of the 120-car order will also be pushed back at least four months, Nowakowski said. Final delivery of all the railcars is now scheduled for October 2010.

Rotem, a division of South Korean automaker Hyundai Motors Group, and Sojitz Corp., a Japanese company, have formed a consortium to build 120 Silverliner V Regional Rail cars for SEPTA for $274 million.

Rotem was unable to procure enough of the type of steel specified in the SEPTA contract because the U.S. government has cornered the market; it is using the steel for armoring vehicles bound for Iraq, Nowakowski said.

The railcars will be assembled at a South Philadelphia plant from components brought in from around the world. The initial three test cars are being built in South Korea.

Just heard that a new Silverliner V car will be on display at Suburban Station
sometime during the month of August. Maybe it's the pilot car. Can't wait to see it.

I have pictures of the 1st car in Korea. It looks much like the piture I posted on here last year and also in railpace. I dont wantto post the pics til I get permission to. Someone at Septa gave them to me but Im not trying to put this person out on the limb. I will say that it looks like the computer generated photo, and even has the same paint job. Overall it doesnt look to bad.

Here is a link for anyone interested in reading 569 pages about the SLVs. http://www.septa.org/business/100000_ov ... _05_r0.pdf
900,000 tons of steel, made to roll
The brakes don't work and this grade's so steep
her engines sure to blow...
900,000 tons of steel, out of control
She's more a roller coaster, than the train I used to know.

There have been erroneous reports in railfan circles about the Silverliner V status. What is wrapped up and on the way to Philadelphia from South Korea is a mockup, and not a prototype. A prototype can run under its own power and has preliminary versions of all its subsystems. A mockup is a full-scale model that is only partly operational at best. Having the mockup will give SEPTA a chance to give engineers and other personnel a chance to familiarize themselves with what they will be working with, and can give passengers an idea of what the interiors will be like.

Is the mock-up indeed en route? Any ETA? Any shipping info, vessel/voyage, port of entry, etc.?

I have no official info, but I believe some of NJT's new engines came in South Philly and sat around on the port lead from the Greenwich yard. The trains will not have far to go as the assembly plant is right behind Ikea. I was past the building today and noticed a Rotem sign on the one end, something newer I believe. Didn't get a good look at the track next to the building to see if it got cleaned up, as far as I know it only moves tankers going to the plant by Snyder and Water street.
