After midnight weekend Juniper Sub-surf station open?

Postby Patrick Boylan » Tue Jan 01, 2019 12:26 pm

I've sent SEPTA an online info request to clarify.
The subway-surface schedules, at least the online pdf's, have footnotes "C - Please Board/Depart this trip at City Hall (15th St Station) as 13th and Market Sts Station is closed 12:30AM - 5:00AM."
I happen to be planning a trip that will involve changing from the Market-Frankford Subway-Elevated and don't want to miss the last 34 trolley when the nightclub closes. Since MFSE runs weekends instead of the owl bus substitute which runs Mon-Fri am I suspect, and hope, that the footnote's intended to mean the subway-surface station formerly known as Juniper is closed only when the MFSE doesn't run.

The non-pdf links don't have any such footnote. The google transit link on SEPTA's home page says to transfer at 15th, using MFO, which I think is owl bus per the graphic map, when I enter Fri 2am, and MFL, which I think is Market-Frankford Line, per the same graphic map, when I enter Sat 2am.

I can't figure why they need to close the Juniper station when the owl bus doesn't run and the train runs weekend am. Stay tuned for what SEPTA's reply is.

Would you be able to make your transfer to the 34 at 30th Street instead?

Yes, and if the el runs faster between 13th-15th and 30th than the trolleys do, which one usually expects, the connection's more guaranteed.
13th's a bit more convenient since it's down a relatively short stairway that's usually right at the 1st car, although I admit I haven't ridden owl service and they're probably not the 6 car trains to which I'm accustomed. 30th however requires going up stairs and the down stairway to the trolleys is about twice as long as the one at 13th.

Septa answered me, ignored that I was asking about weekend service, or ignored that the trains run all night weekends.

Good afternoon,

Thank you for contacting SEPTA Customer Service to inquire about overnight hours at the 13th Street trolley station. Your reading is correct. This trolley station is closed from 12:30am to 5am and you have to catch night owl trolley lines at 15th Street during that time. The 13th Street MFL station has similar weeknight hours, as it is closed after the final train of the night (about 12:30) and reopens in time for the first morning train. Please feel free to contact SEPTA Customer Service if you have any other questions.

Best Regards,

I also feel it's sloppy that his signature says his email address is different from the one from which the email came.
I replied
I thought you were customer service. Your answer confuses me since it says "it is closed after the final train of the night (about 12:30) and reopens in time for the first morning train".
Why then does http://www.septa.org/service/all-night.html say "Market-Frankford & Broad Street Line service will operate 24 hours on Friday & Saturday for late night travel "
and why does http://www.septa.org/schedules/transit/pdf/mfl.pdf show "Saturday and Sunday Early Morning Train Service. Nite-Owl buses do not operate." and westbound trains stopping at 13th st every 20 minutes 12:59 am till 5:59 am, times you say the station's closed?

SEPTA | Market-Frankford & Broad Street Line All Night Weekend Service
SEPTA has launched 24 hour service on the Market-Frankford & Broad Street Lines for late night, Friday and Saturday evening travel. Regular Owl Bus service will operate Sunday through Thursday nights.

edit: I was surprised to get a response on a holiday.

Agree that the stairways to/from the MFL platform at 13th St are shorter overall than at 30th. But, if you are departing the El westbound at 13th, you would have to walk to the extreme ends of the (side) platform & then go down the stairway to the Subway-Surface trolley platform. At 30th, while you would walk up the stairway from the El's (center) platform, then to the mezzanine, then down again to the Subway-Surface trolley platform, it's more centrally located in the station layout proper. (My place of employment is directly above the eastbound 13th St station.)

Dear Mr. Boylan,

Thank you for replying to us and clarifying the matter. I apologize for misunderstanding. I reached out to Management of Subway/Elevated Stations, and it was explained to me that on Friday and Saturday nights when the Market-Frankford Line runs overnight, trolleys will also be stopping at the 13th Street station, and customers can catch the Nite-Owl trolley lines (routes 10, 13, and 36) there during the overnight hours in the same way they can board the MFL there.

I hope this answers your question. Please feel free to contact SEPTA Customer Service if you have any further questions or have any other concerns to share.

Kindest Regards,

Hello,

Thank you for contacting SEPTA Customer Service. 13th St Station is open at this time for the Market-Frankford Line but not for the Trolleys.

13th St Station has a level for the Market-Frankford Line and a lower level for the Trolleys. The lower level is not accessible during this time.

Please contact us if you have any further questions.

Kindest Regards,

David, please see Albert Melli's reply below. I won't take the risk that I'll miss the last 34 trolley on Saturday morning, and will instead transfer at 30th St, but he feels that 13th St downstairs IS OPEN when 13th St upstairs is open, although he first thought downstairs was closed and paid no attention to upstairs until I pointed out to him that upstairs is open.

I guess I'll never know, it's too important for me to be able to get home, hence I'll transfer at 30th St, than it is to find out the truth.

Hello,
Thank you for reaching back out to us. After speaking with Senior Management I have been advised that Trolley service is available at 13th St Station at 2:00 AM on a Saturday. Management will be reviewing the printed timetables and what is listed on our website.
