Sept 2017 Regional Rail Schedule Change (Starts 9/10)

New schedules for regional rail take effect this weekend. A few observations...

1. Wilmington Line gets a new Saturday late night round-trip run (we'll see how long it'll be until a crew shortage/manpower issue causes a cancellation).

2. Still no half-hourly midday/weekend service on the Manayunk/Norristown Line (a seriously broken promise if there ever was one)

3. Heck, I still long for the days of a half-hour weekend service (at least if it is only on Saturdays) on the Lansdale/Doylestown Line.

On 1, 235 and 9236 are in the present schedule as far as Marcus Hook; the change is just an extension to Wilmington, so there shouldn't be any crew issues that haven't already surfaced.

The weekend Doylestown trains can't compete with a car anymore.

The weekend trains now take 30 minutes just to run 10 miles from Doylestown to Lansdale. The automobile trip can beat that, PLUS the convenience of not waiting an hour for the train.

Since the Doylestown line was upgraded from 40mph to 50mph, the 10mph passing siding north of Chalfont was removed, and cab signals were installed for safety, scheduled running times have increased 50% since the 1980's. The average train speed is 20mph with the current scheduled weekend running times from Doylestown to Lansdale. The most egregious is a 10 minute run from Chalfont to Colmar.

Point 1 has been covered.
Point 2, hopefully we will see that when more Conductors and Engineers are promoted. Right now they're struggling as it is to maintain existing service.
Point 3, This would be ideal, the existing Frazer-Jefferson trips could be extended. It could possibly be covered by weekend crews already working.
