HBLRT West Side Avenue Service Suspension

Postby ryanov » Thu Feb 07, 2019 7:28 pm

Boy this seems stupid -- HBLRT West Side Ave service will be suspended for 9 months in the near future:

Every time they do work on the sewer in that area, they have to suspend service? They'll actually be removing the tracks and the overhead wires in order to perform this work, which is scheduled to take 2 months on its own.

The sewer is under the track under

"Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority (JCMUA) is repairing a sewer pipe that runs directly underneath the light rail tracks. It will take NJ TRANSIT at least two months to decommission the section of the West Side Avenue light rail line, removing wire, shutting off electricity and removing track before JCMUA will have access to the worksite."

I understand that. I'm saying that seems to be a problem.

Can't believe (sarcasm) this branch has disappointed with ridership, if this is not the first time this happened.

As a long-time NJ resident/NJT-rider, we were always able to say, "well, at least we're not as dumb as SEPTA". I think we can all say, we're now right there with them cutting class.

Why do they need to close the line for the extension? I am not familiar with the exact details of it, but one would think that they can build the extension without affecting the existing line and then connect it to the existing line over a weekend (or to be generous, a week). Isn't one of the best features of extensions that they do not affect the operation of the line until connected?
