when portal is blocked , when no alternatives ?

Let me just say, I understand there are limitations, but making alternative response never has happened? When cant trains run from Trenton to Newark then head to bayhead? So there is some type of service?

What good would running to Bayhead do when your destination is NY Penn? Many miles AWAY from Ney York. There is PATH from Newark to WTC or 33rd Street, and there are agreements to cross honor NJT tickets when there are bridge or tunnel issues. Also diverting NY bound trains from the NEC to Hoboken could help, although the track configuration may not be the best. Again this would use PATH (and the ferries), but Bayhead makes no sense at all.

Really, when you are coming up to NYC from Trenton and train service is suspended between NWK and NYP, you might as well just get off at NWK and take the Path. The ride from Bay Head to NYP takes too long anyway and just getting into your car to drive to Bay Head from the Trenton area, probably adds 45 minutes to an hour. Plus the service from Bay Head is sparse anyway.

Depending on which station you board on the NEC, there are bus routes to NYC. If not, then close by. In Princeton, Coach USA runs daily bus service to NYC and it runs close to the NEC and in some cases, stops in towns where the NEC stops-Downtown New Brunswick.

Midtown Direct trains do get diverted to Hoboken. Those and the regular trains to Hoboken probably leave very little capacity/ability to divert any NEC trains in addition.

The days of running on wired freight routes is long GONE!
The remaining "relief" is PATH from NWK and HOB,will get plugged up real fast.
The "Crusader"(RDG) route is a 4-way circus(SEPTA-CSX-CRSA-NJT)CSX will NOT Allow Passenger Detour Trains! :(

At Hoboken the ferries + PATH can handle more diverted passengers than PATH alone at Newark. They should try and squeeze a few more Trenton/NJCL trains in during the disruptions. Obviously not all of them, but maybe one of each per hour.

The other alternative which would help is extending the JSQ-33rd trains to Newark, except over the past 15 years PATH has become completely incompetent at handling anything other than regularly scheduled service.

Eventually when stars align, Hoboken will gain 6 or so tracks in the place of the Long Slip Canal and will be able to handle more trains, but this is NJT, so don't expect that to happen in your lifetime. After Sandy the Feds gave them money to fill the canal. They have not even begun the extension of the Jersey City sewer which is necessary before the canal can be filled. I suspect that in another year or so the money will be forfeited.

Last time I had to deal with it, I took the 108 bus. PATH was flooded by passengers, while the bus lanes and the bus itself were half empty. Made a few stops in Union City, but had a great trip otherwise.

That bus got busy after Hurricane Sandy suspended everything for a relatively long period -- people eventually figured it out. A driver frequently running the route at the time I used it remarked to me "your limo ride is over." Overall, a nice way to get home, provided the time works out (hourly).
