The Main/Bergen/Port Jervis Line Thread

Postby trainbrain » Wed May 29, 2013 4:19 pm

This is the place for any general discussion about the Main/Bergen/Port Jervis line.

Recently I have noticed that the Main/Bergen Line has 3 Multilevel sets. I think that they used to have only 2 but when they got the ML2's they added one. Does anyone know if this is true? Will the Main/Bergen line will get any more Multilevel sets in the future and how will that affect the weekday and weekend rotations?

Nope, still on 2 sets, we had 3 sets for a few weeks before some ML's went back for faulty springs. In rush hour the sets are on: 1121, 1114, 1120, 1126, 1128, 1167, 1173, 1277 and 1280

Not 1277 and 1280 as of today unless there are some swaps made mid-day. Remember, cycles and EQ are always subject to change. Today the 2 ML sets started on X113/1102 and X133/1252. I'm not listing the whole "scheduled" cycles. Don't forget the RVL train 2406 that normally turns for X135/1254.

Also, I've seen 2 sets of comet II and IV equipment on the line recently with only a comet V cab on each. Refreshing to see other equipment than the usual comet V and ML only on these lines.

Will we soon be getting the third set back? Also I believe that the weekend trains that use them are 1707, 1708, 1711, 1712, 1717, 1718, 1871, 1870, 1725, 1726, 1727, 1728, 1883, 1882, 1787, and 1786 with 2 sets. Does anyone know if this is correct?

In the new schedules, I see that weekend trains that used to generally leave Suffern (eastbound) at 12 past the hour, are now going to leave at 8 past. But the Secaucus connections to NYP don't seem to have changed. So, the weekend trips to NYP will take 4 minutes longer.
Doe anyone know why they made this change? It's been 12 past for years...

JoeG... NJT blames platform construction at Secaucus for the new schedules. All weekend trains will be using one set of platforms. How long the project will go on and if the schedules will go back afterwords is not known to me...

We may have the third set back. On 6/2/13 I saw 2 sets on the Meadowlands line and 1 on 1724. All 3 were original Multilevels not ML2's. I rode 1708 to NYC and 1727 back and they were not ML's. Usually they are so they must've been using them on the Meadowlands line.

Two Raritan based sets were used today on the Meadowlands runs. They were returned to Raritan as far as I know

I'm told that the Bergen Line is the busier (and faster, barely) of the two routings. The Main Line is called the Main Line as it was the original Lackawanna Main Line (up through Paterson) and was the first few stops on the present day Boonton Line (pre-Montclair Connection and pre-NYGL). The Port Jervis Line will use either the Main or the Bergen Line, depending on the schedule (and also, depending on conditions; I've been on trains that were routed to the other line due to changing conditions.)

The Main Line was the original Erie Main Line from Jersey City to Chicago via Paterson, Buffalo and Akron. It was in 1963 that the section in Passaic was abandoned (by request from local officials) in favor of a reroute via the Lackawanna Boonton Line from West End north over Upper Hack and via Clifton to Paterson Jct. where the Newark Branch connector would link to the original Main Line. The Boonton Line now went via the Greenwood Lake to Mountain View and then west on the original route, as the section in West Paterson and Totowa was severed by I-80 construction. Bergen Line is 100% Erie, Main Line is Erie north of Paterson, the former built as a "bypass" or shortcut. Rutherford was part of the original Main Line.
