You are not going to see high speed switches around Summit. There is no need for them. It is such an important stop that, practically no train will ever skip it. It the train is stopping at or departing Summit the benefit of the high speed switch is non-existent.

I also do not see moving the entire yard west of the station as likely -- too much money for too little benefit. Third track between Summit and Millburn will be nice, but good luck with the NIMBYs. After the completion of the pocket track (in year 2045 :P ), the next thing that can be reasonably accomplished is to restore the third track through Millburn station, so that a stopped train at Millburn does not delay the expresses. There used to be a third track there, the bridge over Lackawanna Pl is still there and the catenary structures are still there, you pretty much need to just cut back the platform and install the track and the wires. Unfortunately that amount of work probably triggers ADA for the station and both platforms will need to become high level plus elevators.

It would be great to have the third track between Millburn and Summit but that won't happen. There are plenty of NIMBY's in Millburn and the right of way is on a hill, especially between Short Hills and Summit with little room to build the third track. Along the M&E, the third track is needed the most through Harrison, especially over the Passaic River bridge, which there is a plan to replace both the bridge and add the third track.

A pocket track in Summit is important, especially since many trains terminate there during the rush hour.

The yard is not being moved west of the station. The west end of the interlocking is being moved west of the station with the addition of a turn track pocket. No physical work has been started on this project but it is in the plans to be done.
