Best hiking near New York City

Get there via train or bus. The article mentions the Appalachian Trail, but doesn't mention. I live near it in Pennsylvania, and yes, there are rattlers in it.
It also mentions Van Cortlandt Park at the north end of the city, and the Putnam Trail, the right of way of the New York Central's Putnam Division. It was still running when I was a child.

Here's an article on Putnam trail.

I am surprised that the article does not mention the Walkway over the Hudson at Poughkeepsie which can be reached by the Metro North Hudson Line. It is a little over a mile each direction and it is well worth while.
