I mean, i'm assuming this is true, because i need some good news. These ones don't need a complete rebuild, unless pickers managed to get into a yard. They were returned to CDOT in operational condition.

I do hope this actually happens, as this would be just about the coolest thing I have ever seen on the rails save for steam. One question springs to mind though - why is the nose door suddenly an issue? Amtrak ran all their GCT trains last summer with a nose door-less P42 on the other end, and before the West Side Line was completed Amtrak ran Turboliners down Park Avenue without nose doors. And I’m sure lots of other equipment over the years on Park Avenue has also lacked a nose door.

I still think this is too good to be true... Those FL9s need a lot of work and I just have a hard time believing they can address them at Rensselear. Lots of current and former MN employees think they will have enough MARC cabs to use them instead, so the point is pretty much moot.

How interesting it is that now with all of this talk going on that it was just 9 years ago this month that the FL--9's (CDOT that is) made their last trips in February, 2009. I went way back on this site (Metro-North that is) to establish this information. From what I have read they were stored in pretty good order. Let's see what happens in the next few weeks.

Believe the whole point of reactivating the ConnDOT Fl-9's is to give MN some flex on what track to use in the Park Ave Tunnel.
Otherwise Amtrak is limited to tracks 1 and 2 into GCT due to the lack of the nose door on their P32DM's, believe it's a NYFD requirement for GCT.

OK that would explain it then, as before they could get away with only using one or a few tracks for the several trains a day into GCT. Back to the FL9s themselves though, the idea to reactivate them sounds to me like one of those that come from someone in charge who does not really have a railroad background, but was given the basic information; i.e. “some stored locomotives exist somewhere that fit our criteria” and ran with the idea.

As far fetched as it may sound, if the 6 units were indeed stored in good enough order that they can be not-so-uneasily revived in 3 months' time let's just wait and see what happens. Those in the know we should defer judgement to for the time being (Noel and Railjunkie in particular).

Bear in mind that these 6 FL9's were extensively rebuilt in the late 1990's. They aren't stock as-delivered 1958 locomotives.

PAR's two FP10 OCS locos have nose doors. Maybe Tim Mellon would lease them to MN for three months
Thanks to Hayden Logan for the photo.

PAR has no FP10's their executive F units are FP-7.
If Conductors are in charge, why are they promoted to be Engineer???

A possibility that we are both incorrect This historical web list of CN locos
lists the 6516 and 6505, now the P'AR OCS locos 1&2 as FP9a locos.

I be scared out of my wits to operate anything PanAm maintained at speeds over 50 mph .
I also doubt the units have Cab Signal/ATC .

so today (2/21) i was riding MNR into GCT. We were on track 4 (westernmost) past 125th Street at approx 11a
A train passed coming out of GCT on track 2 and I realized it had amfleet coaches and a P42 painted in Phase 3 colors
bringing up the rear. I didn't catch what was on the head end.
How did this train operate into GCT if the P42 was the "cab car" without the nose door?

you do NOT need nose door on two center tracks.

problem is two outside tracks, the single track tunnel has no side clearance to get out of locomotive , specially if there is a fire.
