Train fire @ North Station

Postby Redman » Thu Jun 14, 2012 1:41 pm

At time of posting, the fire was knocked down. Saw this report on Twitter, so here it is for those that don't know:

At roughly 1:33PM, Boston FD was dispatched to North Station for a fire on a locomotive. Prior to BFD dispatch, all MBTA trains were being stopped into Harvard due to reported smoke in the tunnel. It was later determined that an inbound locmotive was "shooting fire out the exhaust." Although it was originally reported as an Amtrak loco, it turned out to be a MBCR loco that was leaving small track fires in it's wake.

Upon arrival at North Station, the MBTA advised that N. Station be evacuated due to a risk of the locomotive going sky-high. After roughly an hour, BFD knocked the fire down and kept water on the engine to cool it off. At the moment, BFD is tweeting about it (@BostonFire) so take a lookey-loo there for a quick tl;dr version.

This makes no sense. What do Harvard and any tunnel have to do with the north side commuter rail?

Maybe that part of the Twitter report was referring to this incident.

There were two seperate incidents today. One was a trash fire at Harvard which is a station on the RED LINE subway. The second involved a fire on a locomotive at North Station which is the COMMUTER RAIL north side terminal.

Did that one go through the top deck already or was it on the waiting list?

It was a fire in the exhaust system of the HEP unit. The main engine was not effected. It appears to have more cosmetic damage than anything.

Has she been removed from service or was she able to continue on later that day?

Don't recall seeing it posted anywhere, but 1132 is back in service. Saw it this afternoon at South Station.

Not to mention that the HEP in 1132 is virtually *brand new, having been one of the 1100s that went out for HEP replacement ;)
