Sweet, but would anybody know why that color scheme? Its a work car, shouldnt it be safety yellow? That scheme kinda looks like it should belong to another railroad.

So will this be an addition, or a replacement for one of the other two?

That appears to be the new southside caboose, thought I'd never see it! It will be dedicated to one of the conductors that past away sometime ago but wow looks great and it's badly needed.

It is in the same scheme of our current work train caboose. This will be the third caboose purchased by the MBTA in the last 15 or so years! The second one sits at BET with some work done but is mainly untouched since it was moved to the property.

OH MY GOD, I LOVE IT!!!

Sorry, but I'm a big fan of C-1 and her scheme, so of course C-2 is awesome too!

What is a Work Extra caboose used for on a commuter rail system? Storing/hauling equipment? Mobile office? Or something else?

It is essentially a cab car. When they want to change directions, rather than run the locomotive around the work consist, or having someone hang off the back, they just sit in the caboose and have the locomotive push the train. I don't know if they do anything else with it, like store tools inside or whatever.

You are close but the engineer does not have the ability to operate the locomotive from the caboose like a control car, it is simply to give the conductor a space to ride in for shoving moves where the engine cant be ran in the lead. It only has a bell, headlights, e brake and a horn. Usually there is a table with seats in it and I'm told the new one will have a generator as the current one does as well for power.

Is the caboose going to be coming any time soon? Its been a while. Looks finished as far we can see.
