Postby GP40MC 1116 » Sat Jan 01, 2005 2:22 am

Does anyone know what those electrical boxes at the end of the tracks at South Station near the bumper posts are. Some sort of system to keep the trains electical system or engine's going. Sort of a jump start. Any help?

They are 480v ground power units that can provide electricity to stationary coaches in lieu of a locomotive's HEP. You most often see the ones at South Station used by private cars or Amtrak's inspection car.

They're also common at Commuter Rail layover yards, where consists are plugged in to allow the locomotive to be shut down overnight.
