Nice editorial in the Globe on why New Balance is making a significant statement with this station. It's them saying that they believe commuter rail really does serve employers.

The New Brighton Landing project was approved by the BRA yesterday, meaning that construction will begin before year's end. No timeline on the station, but it's assumed to be parallel with the project, which will finish in stages between 2015 and 2017.

The company also plans to pay for all costs associated with designing, permitting and building, operating and maintaining a commuter rail station on the Framingham-Worcester Line tracks that abut the 14-acre site’s northern edge, sandwiched by the Massachusetts Turnpike.

The new station, a separate project agreed to by the state transportation department, is expected to cost $16 million. No construction timetable has been announced.

New Balance announced the other day that they intend to open the station in 2014. They plan to have the design and permitting done by next year and then build in a year.

It's amazing how fast things get done when somebody actually cares about a project. Compare this and Rhode Island to the multi-year snoozefests of Yawkey and the Fairmount Line.

Dont count your chickens before they hatch.

Remember, Yawkway once WAS a 100% private project, before the state had to take over because the developers failed.

Assembly square also got off the ground because of private funding which dried up before it was paid up.

Businesses wanting rail service is a good thing, but saturating a line with stops is not. Transit oriented development makes more sense than development oriented transit when the transit system has already been established. Perhaps NB should support a new "A line" built through Union Square, Allston to follow the 64 bus route to "New Brighton Landing." :P

It has started! The old vacant building (with the broken blue awnings) (approximately 115 Guest St) next to the Mass Electrical Construction Company on Guest st was being demolished today. They haven't finished yet, but they already took about half of it down.

I live in Brighton and commute past the site multiple times a week (on the 64), so I'll provide updates when they start building!

Started on what? The train station? Or the New Balance corporate headquarters? Either way -- I'm surprised, I didn't think they had all the permits necessary for either.

No, but demolishing that old warehouse building is the first step. They may not have the permits to build yet, but they certainly got permits to demolish!

News story : State to vote on plan for 'Boston Landing' commuter rail station near New Balance project in Brighton

A key state Transportation Department panel voted unanimously Tuesday to support a plan for new commuter rail station in Brighton, which New Balance would pay to construct and to operate for at least the first decade after the station opens.

The station would sit next to an area where the shoe company is building a massive, $500 million development project.

The station proposal was approved by the finance committee of the state agency's board of directors. It is scheduled to be considered for final approval by the entire Transportation Department board on Wednesday, May 22.
The station would be called “Boston Landing.” New Balance officials have said previously they hope it would open in 2014, which would make it the first completed component of the company’s large development.

The station would include a single platform, centered between the eastbound and westbound tracks of the Framingham-Worcester line, said Mark Boyle, the MBTA’s assistant general manager for development.

I wonder if this interferes at all with Harvard's desires for a "West Station"? Seeing as it likely wouldn't have been much further east from here.

If the state transportation board approves the proposal, a public community process about the project’s design would likely begin within 60 days after approval, Boyle said.


One hopes that New Balance having a stake in this will allow for a community input process that's a whole lot quicker than the average MBTA project.
