DOT Car?

Postby WatertownCarBarn » Wed Aug 03, 2011 12:30 pm

Sorry if this has been already answered! I was at Tufts today and saw a single car train pass outbound around 9AM. It was moving at quite a clip, that's why it originally caught my eye. The car I believe had the DOT logo on it. What was it up to? Thanks.

It was the FRA DOTX 220 Track Geometry Car on its way to Portland, Me. It will be returning tomorrow (Thursday).

Can we expect some slow orders to be slapped on as a result of this trip?

Because of this:

I suspect it was going too fast to be operating and to pick anything up while en route.

These cars test at track speed.

Ah, thanks.

Not all of the various testing cars can do so, though, right? Like the Sperry car on the Cobble track has to go at a pretty reduced speed?

Yes, the Sperry Car that visits us two time a year tests at a reduced speed. But the Sperry car is testing the rail itself where Geo cars are testing the road bed and the geometry of the rail. The FRA/DOT car more than likely will not create any slow orders as we recently had Amtrak's Geo (Corridor Clipper) test the same track.

The 220 can test track up to 125 MPH.

The Sperry car can now test up to 16 MPH, which is an improvement over its previous maximum of 12 MPH (while testing).

I saw a DOT car hooked up to the 3247 here today around 2:50 while I was peddling along the charles on one of those new fangled Hubway bikes (btw if anyone cares to have a discussion about Hubway I started a thread here) I assume it had either just come off the grand junction or was about to cross the grand junction.

For all the information you ever wanted to know on the DOTX 220, see here: http://atip.fra.dot.gov/public/about/DOTX_220.pdf

The 220 is actually part of a family of five that makes up the Federal Railroad Administration's Automated Track Inspection Program fleet. The 217,218,219 and are actually self propelled, however it has been common practice over the past several years to have the car's be towed by the host railroad's locomotive.

What the hell is going on here (on the Haverhill line)

Postby moorebf235 » Fri May 04, 2012 9:05 am

I was checking the Robot Foamer site and I saw this
Image

For a second I thought it was a Downeaster car but then I realized the blue wasn't that light. So where the hell is it from and what is it doing being pulled by an MBTA engine?

It's a US DOT track inspection car. I've lost track of all the places in local railfandom where it's been mentioned, but I believe it's testing parts of the northside before getting handed off to Pan Am to go to Portland.
Wondering if I'll see the Haverhill double-tracking finished before I retire...

Oh hey I didn't see this topic when I started mine. It caught 3 pictures of it so it wasn't going fast when it was going by the camera.
