01100 and 01400 consists in more than four cars?

01100 and 01400 consists in more than four cars?

I am extremely familiar with 01400's while I was riding these back in their last days in the early 1990's, and do remember that all 01400 trains at that time were four cars maximum.

As for the 01100's, I don't even recall riding this group of trains, since I arrived in Boston in 1983 when I was only four.

However, I do recall seeing one pic that the 01100 did run a six-car consist, probably during a peak hour run.

How often did the 01100s and 01400s run in consists higher than four cars?

The 01100's never ran in 6 car consists unless there waas a problem with a set. The platforms couldn'a handle 6 car trains. And there was an experiment on the Red Line for a very short time that 01400's ran with 6 cars but the door by the motorperson's cab on the front and the rear of the train was cut-out because they couldnt fit all the doors of a 6 car train on the platform with one end or the other sticking oout of the station off the platform.

I saw 01100s in 6-8 car trains being shifted to Wellington from Forest Hills after the Haymarket North extension was opened, but of course no passengers were allowed on.

As far as I was concerned with the 01400s, yes, they were unsuccessful in running a 6-car consist of such model for the above stated reason. Even during rush hours during their last days, they could only run in 4-car sets, not 6.

Did they (the 01400's) run in 2-car sets still around the end of their lives when the Silverbirds were running 6?

The 01400's were the same length as all other Red Line cars - 69 feet 6 inches, so they did fit onto the platforms. The problem as noted above was the doors on each end of the train that were right next to the cab - if the motorperson didn't exactly stop at the '6' car marker, there was a risk that one set of doors would open up to a 4-foot drop! From what I was told, during the test period this happened often enough to make MBTA officials nervous and decide to restrict the 01400's to four-car sets.

As far as two-car trains are concerned, I don't remember seeing any Red Line trains shorter than four cars since the early 1980's, when the rule that required one door guard for two cars was repealed by the legislature as part of the 'management rights' reforms.

You know, the 01400s door locations are pretty much in the same location as their replacement 01800s, so they could have run 6-car 01400 consist.

As for two car consists on the Red Line (whether it was 01400s or 01600s), I think that practice ended around late 1986, because by 1987, I only saw 4-car Red Line trains, which was of course loooong before the 01800s arrived.

Six-car trains of 01100s operated between March and June of 1958, but required the use of sliding platforms at Sullivan and Dudley.


Also, Rob, while you're correct that the doors of 01400s and 01800s are "pretty much" in the same locations, I compared scale drawings of the cars and found that the doors on the 01800s are inboard of those on the 01400s by about 4', which is more than enough of a difference to account for the inability to operate 6-car trains of 01400s.
