All removed from service, or just 51 & 61?

They must have ended the lease this month. I could understand this if the 5 units that are in Altoona were back.

Are the T's Geeps due back in service by winter? NETransit shows 12 locos awaiting repairs at BET as of yesterday's site update, which seems like they're skating on threadbare reserves.

Were these things too problematic to continue operating?

I am not going to say the MARC units were that reliable, but a few of them really have stepped up to the plate. Until the 5 units in Altoona come back, it will be quite interesting to say the least.

How many locomotives are there left in reserve now that these have gone?

Lets see, 76 total, excludes 1016 which was parted out, and 1066 which needs a new engine block.

12 out of service at BET, leaves 64 locomotives. They're only in for maintenance, inspection, and/or minor repairs so they will leave sooner or later, but the number will never go down to 0 since locomotives will be rotated in and out for maintenance and inspection.

4 locomotives at Altoona (soon to return), which leaves 60 locomotives in service at this time.

Minimum locomotive requirement is 23 for the North side, and 37 for the south side, which is 60 locomotives total. The 5 MARC units were literally the "spares" that they needed.

When the MARC units are returned, and the 4 GP40MCs return from Altoona, they would have 4 spares plus whatever BET can spare from the 12 locomotives held for inspection/maintenance/repair.

All of this math was done from info provided by NETrainsit.

Oh boy. This sounds "interesting" indeed...not what the average commuter wants to hear. :-\

just in time for winter. when we got these units, one of the rationales was because equipment breaks down more in the winter (apparently)

What is the projected return date for the 5 Geeps in the rebuild program? And how caught up is BET on the bumps and bruises for the active fleet so that OOS-for-repair number doesn't stay worryingly high?

NETransit reports that there are only 4 engines at Altoona, 1120, 1126, 1128, and 1133. Who knows when they'll return?

1066 will go to MPI sometime next year (which won't help in the winter)

The 76 locomotives in my previous post do not include 1016 or 1066.

The 1120 should be the first unit to leave Altoona, but nothing is out of there as of 3PM today.
