Could have used a K car on the 429 to Fitchburg yesterday. It was SRO in at least the first 3 cars. Of course, it doesn't help that the MBTA dispatcher has been shorting the train a car quite a bit lately. Even a flat would've helped.

I have been riding the line for over 6 years now. Every year it is like this. Ridership decreases in August making a 5-car flat reasonable. Then it increases significantly the first few weeks of September and people getting on at Porter have to stand until somebody in Somerville coughs up another car. It would be nice if they would take notes and review them from time to time.
Trains don't run on schedules, son. They run on tracks.

I have ridden quite a few Providence/Wickford Jct. evening rush-hour trains which have 7-8 car consists composing entirely of K-Cars and that is still not enough. There are people standing in the aisles, on the steps inside the coach, in the vestibules, etc; in almost every coach.

Very similar situation on the rush hour Worcester line trains. If ridership goes up by much more people will be riding on the roof.

Is there any official point where conductors have to say, "that's enough, we refuse to let any more board the train, we're leaving now"?

I don't think that will ever happen.

You also have to figure in that maybe the people who make up trains maybe don't ride the T

Well, anyway, to keep from going too far off topic there probably wont be anymore Bi-Level coaches coming to the North Side until the new Rotem coaches arrive(IF they ever arrive).

The official point is dictated by the laws of physics. When cancellations and delayed trains have one train packed to the gills so much that even the vestibules cannot fit another body without reaching a dangerous crush load, then yes, I've seen train crews forced to turn away passengers.

According to today's NE Transit update, there's just one K-car left in operation on the North Side, 926.

Yes, sort of. The 926 has been added to the Rotem test train.

The 922 went South Sunday, that was the other North Side K car that held on. So right now, we have no K cars operating on the North Side.

Will the K cars be phased out once all the new rotem cars get placed into service?

Nope. The K cars are still the newer and better cars in the fleet, as they were built in 1990 and after. The Rotems will replace the older single-level cars.

The MBTA is working, ultimately, towards an all-bilevel fleet. With the exception of the partially-to-all-EMU-based SEPTA, LIRR, NJT, and MNRR, most commuter agencies are. You'll see the bilevels more on the north side eventually - after the Rotems arrive the fleet will be almost 2/3 bilevel - although I can't say as to whether that will occur at Rotem-time or the next order.

Obviously you haven't seen the thread where they are all going through mid life overhaul.
