K Car Operations on the North Side

Postby sery2831 » Sat Oct 30, 2010 1:02 am

The first North Side set has had a K car placed into the consist. The train right now is the 1119-6-1651... The 922 is located behind the locomotive. Look for additional sets this week to get a 900 series K car placed behind the locomotive.

Any particular reason for this shuffling of consists?

From today's Boston Globe Starts and Stops column:

The new MBTA coaches will eventually be scattered among the North and South Station lines. Only the South Station trains have run with double-decker, or bilevel, coaches — which number 140 out of the fleet of 410 — but that will change on a limited basis starting today, Davey said, when the T deploys double-decker coaches on the additional “Haunted Happenings’’ trains running to Salem for Halloween. More will be rotated in on high-demand North Station lines in the future, Davey said.

I'm going to set an over/under of 3 months of K cars on the northside.

I wouldn't even call that a shuffling if there is only 1 k car in the set! Sounds like they just added 1 to a set that was already north.

There are immediate plans to put ONE K Car in operation out of each terminal on the Northside as the cars come out of the repair shop.

Monday's #227 (4:30 to Haverhill) had 922 in the consist. The regulars were quite pleased, except that it doesn't have WiFi. Essentially everything that runs on the north side except the MBB control/bathroom coaches has WiFi, so I was surprised. Did they skip the south side in that program?

I believe right now none of the bathroom cars and active control cars have wifi. The 900s are bathroom cars. And the plan is to bring 900s North.

Wow - so if I read it correctly, #227 not only got a K car, but a 6 car set, too? I've all but given up on that train (wait for #231 instead) because #227 so often seems to be SRO (as its usually only a 5 car set) for the first several stops, while #231 often under-utilized (judging by the number of times I get a seat to myself).
Wondering if I'll see the Haverhill double-tracking finished before I retire...

Yes, Monday's #227 had 6 cars; the K was ahead of the usual MBB bathroom car. I can usually get a seat in the head car at Malden, but sometimes I stand till Wakefield because I'd rather do that than cram myself into the middle of a 3-seat bench. And sometimes even those are all full.

I saw the 922 on a consist last night, with a GP40MC Loco and a 1600 series Bombardier Cab Car(unknown #s) on the Lowell Line headed inbound without any passengers on board! :-)

So, to be clear, the plan is to send K cars northside for what is essentially forever now, right?

I believe that is the plan, the 900s are supposed to come first! :-)

1119 and 922 are currently resting in Fitchburg yard.
Hoping for a rebirth of the Screamer fleet.
