F40PHM-2Cs

Postby diburning » Tue Nov 17, 2009 7:21 pm

I was at the Worcester Layover Yard on sunday and there was a crew there starting up the locomotives (probably to do some sort of tests).

When they started up the F40PHM-2Cs, they sounded like they had EMD 710 prime movers while starting up and idling. Do these engines have 710 power assemblies or something? Or do they actually have the 710 prime mover? (I always thought they were 645s).

There was also a GP40MC next to them that was also started up and sounded exactly like a 645. There was a distinct difference between the two locomotives.

None of the engines had their HEP running.

Which is a slightly more refined and newer engine than the straight 645E3 on the GP40MCs screamers etc. I believe the turbocharger design was also changed slightly.

Not according to the locomotives manual.

Now thats strange because I would figure the F40PH-2C and the F40PHM-2C would have the same Prime Mover but I guess not if that Train manual says otherwise.

They were all standardized into one class of locomotive when they were rebuilt by MotivePower Industries between 2001-2004. Nevertheless they still are from different original orders and the difference can be distinguished by looking below the cab window. I believe they are the same mechanically though.

I heard that the interior of the cabs are different between the EMD built ones and the M-K built ones.
