Nice postings, Rob. Hard to believe that that's the same Boston that we know. Look at the Copley Square photo ! You can't see another carriage in sight down Boylston Street ! Many of the West End's cars were extremely ornate, not only with Victorian furnishings, but, as we discussed, with beautifully themed color codings by Division. Colors like vermillion, peacock blue, teal, magenta were used, making the cars extremely ornate. Funny thing is that you rarely see West End collectibles for sale anywhere. Either they are all in a few collections held privately or they were destroyed by BERy. I understand that there was an issue with BERy men wearing older WE insignia, caps, etc. to show seniority, so maybe that's why (??)

As late as the 1960's, Sunday afternoon in the Back Bay was very quiet and peaceful due to the now defunct "blue laws". I miss the quiet Sundays.

I've got a feeling that if I could read the sign on that storefront, that might give a big clue... Otherwise, I'm stumpted, given thge carhouse itself is invisible in the shot.

Umm...I could be mistaken, but to my knowledge, there never has been a carhouse at this location.

It's still a terminal, has been a terminal on two levels, and may not be a terminal shortly.

Good answer, but unfortunately not the right one. Lechmere came after this photo was taken in the BERy era. This is WEStRy and it's Boston. Don't try to guess it based upon landmarks. This area has really changed a lot. It doesn't look residential though, does it ? Let's think - not residential, no carhouse, in Boston, a consistant terminal, two layers (???) How many terminals exist today in non-residential Boston ? (5 blocks from my Halloween Quiz.) hahaha!!! :-D

Quiz for Nov. 20, '09

Postby 3rdrail » Fri Nov 20, 2009 10:47 pm

In 1966, there was a substantial crash injuring many persons on the New Haven Railroad in the Boston area. Who knows any details of the incident including the location, type of equipment, and probable cause ?
