Outside of aircraft, I can't think of a more brutal duty cycle than that of a passenger locomotive, and the locomotive never gets any meticulous FAA-mandated maintenance, either.

It'll be interesting to see how these mining truck and stationary generator engines hold up under it.

Two more units went down Monday morning with rumored inverter issues.
2038 on #106 and 2030 on #154!

Looks like two more for GE/Erie!

Metra Has A Plan!

Sean Graham-White reports on Loco Notes:

Metra plans on a 10-year modernization program that includes the purchase of 52 new locomotives and 85 rebuilt locomotives. In 2016,
they will begin upgrading eight locomotives in-house, with 10 more to be rehabbed by an outside vendor. The new locomotives will begin arriving after 2020.
I believe the upgraded locomotives are the MP36s -- they are converting them from -3S to -3C by replacing the static HEP inverter with a CAT C18 500kW HEP.
They will also install Electronic Fuel Injection to the engines to improve the emissions from Tier 1 to Tier 1+. As far as I was aware Metra intended to do all
the MP36 upgrades in-house. So I think the rehabs are F40PHMs. The first few MP36s were completed in 2015 -- MPI did the first one, 417, in June 2015.

Um-mm...a poor attempt at cynicism? (In regards to the MBTA locomotives issues)....

It must be some really major inverter issues if the repair has to be done in Erie.

despite all rumors how many HSP-46ac's did actually go back to Erie, other than re-evaluation of EPA test. ???
If Conductors are in charge, why are they promoted to be Engineer???

Dutch

Two units are out there so far. The 2030 & 2038 are likely going based on what I heard
about the damage.

but why all way to western New York while a warranty contract and support was set up with P&W railroad ?
nothing part wise in inverter unit can not be replaced in a standard locomotive shop ?

Rochester, Massachusetts...This is a small facility sent up by Mass DOT / Mass Coastal RR.
Sometimes refereed to as Area 52 (in deference to Area 51). All the retired F40'S are down
there plus coaches and all of the Railworld lease F40's except the 293.

Just to add on to what 1118 wrote, the P&W booted MPI and the T out of their Worcester shops many months ago

I don't think the P&W could handle all the additional work the HSP's were causing, which
is why a lot of units went to NS/Altoona for that traction motor bearing warranty issue.
I think upwards of 12 to 18 units went directly to Altoona from Boise.

Probably was causing problems for their own engines accomodating so many HSPs
