Metra plans on a 10-year modernization program that includes the purchase of 52 new locomotives and 85 rebuilt locomotives. In 2016, they will begin upgrading eight locomotives in-house, with 10 more to be rehabbed by an outside vendor. The new locomotives will begin arriving after 2020. I believe the upgraded locomotives are the MP36s -- they are converting them from -3S to -3C by replacing the static HEP inverter with a CAT C18 500kW HEP. They will also install Electronic Fuel Injection to the engines to improve the emissions from Tier 1 to Tier 1+. As far as I was aware Metra intended to do all the MP36 upgrades in-house. So I think the rehabs are F40PHMs. The first few MP36s were completed in 2015 -- MPI did the first one, 417, in June 2015.
Rochester, Massachusetts...This is a small facility sent up by Mass DOT / Mass Coastal RR. Sometimes refereed to as Area 52 (in deference to Area 51). All the retired F40'S are down there plus coaches and all of the Railworld lease F40's except the 293.
I don't think the P&W could handle all the additional work the HSP's were causing, which is why a lot of units went to NS/Altoona for that traction motor bearing warranty issue. I think upwards of 12 to 18 units went directly to Altoona from Boise.
