Commuter Rail Use during DNC Week

Postby Ed Canney » Tue Jul 27, 2004 3:15 pm

Passed by the Newburyport T Station today around 1pm and counted a grand total of 12 auto's in the parking lot. Either everyone got home early or no one is taking the "T" to work this week. Has any one else seen or heard reports on the number of passengers using commuter rail.

I don't know about Tuesday, but Monday was very light on the North Side. I observed that a couple of trains were heavy but most were near empty.

The trains I took over the weekend -- 10:35 pm Friday Lowell to West Medford, 10:11 am Saturday West Medford to Lowell, 9 pm Saturday Lowell to West Medford, 5 pm Sunday Lowell to West Medford -- were all nearly empty. And this was on Lowell Folk Festival weekend.

I would estimate that the ridership on the rush hour Fitchburg Route trains between South Acton, West Concord, Concord and Porter Square that I've ridden this week has been about half normal. The parking lots have had plenty of spaces, too -- for once. No delays worse than those that occur during other weeks.

Checked out the Reading and Andover lots on Friday. Reading had maybe a total of 20 cars there, Andover had about 40 cars. Pretty empty for 2 PM in the afternoon or so...
