I don't know.... It's kind of like exploiting a kid to get a free paint scheme idea. NASA is doing something similar. (name the next mars rover)

well the B&M did it with naming their locomotives, so why not hold a contest like that. i mean, there would probably be some really interested people.

According to NETransit, the expected delivery date was October, 2008. During the last week of October, that was changed to November. A couple days before Thanksgiving, it was changed to December. In the first week of December, it was changed to January.

What's the holdup? Did NRE run out of retired locos for parts?

Current news is that NRE is building them at the former VMV facility in
Paducah (where the IC/ICG built the FP10's!)

I got a e-mail on the NERAIL mailing list today that said the following. Can anyone say further?

A report on the Loco notes list on Yahoo says that the first of MBTA's two
Genset locomotives was ready to be shipped from VMV at Paducah, KY,
yesterday. Reportedly numbered 3248. No word on what the paint scheme
looks like.

Unless it's posted on NETransit, I'd take it with a grain of salt. NETransit gets updated fairly quickly so if theres any new news, it probably be reported there first.

I know that, NE Transit is more or less the unofficial MBTA online roster!

From what I understand Loco Notes is fairly accurate. Granted NE Transit is too, but sometimes somewhat gets a bite before others do, LOL

Loconotes is one of the definitive engine resources and very accurate.
A few members have inside sources at NRE, so I don't dismiss this report
at all.

Neither unit shows on the CSX Trace as yet. That is, under the MBTX
3248 or 3249 moniker as yet.

It looks like the NREX Demo the MBTA was using and now with the Vermont Rail System (# 2008) has had some "issues"

Take a look at this:

didn't something happen to it while it was on MBTA property?

Also, did anyone notice that the part about the Gensets on NETransit says:

New Switchers (delivery/acceptance pending 01/09): 3248, 3249 (leased demonstrator #2008 to be returned once new units accepted)

Ummm, isn't #2008 in Vermont?

Here are the pictures found on trainweb:

It appears that they have the lower cab as the MBTA requested, has K3LA horns on both ends, and the bell is probably next to the front truck on the conductor's side of the loco.

The lightning stripe scheme somehow looks pretty good on it.

Unlike the demonstrator, it has the lower cab, the chimney style stacks are gone, and the marker lights are next to the numberboards as opposed to wherever they had them before.

The paint does look good. Can't wait to see it be delivered.

I just noticed that it has the NRE waving American flag that was on the nose of the demo unit is now under the engineer's side cab window. In the corner of the nose, theres also a warning that I could assume is a warning about the catenary
