Rail Grinder on the Commuter Rail Discussion

Postby DLahey » Mon Mar 05, 2007 11:03 am

This could be a really silly question...

I live on Somerville Ave in Somerville, just outside of Porter Sq. Last night I was awakened at about 1:15am by a loud noise coming from the CR tracks across the street.
I'm used to the noise that the engines of the CR trains make as they pass by, but this was different.
This wasn't an MBCR train. It looked as if it were several engines pulling cars with very bright lights on them, and whatever this was generated a lot of dust and smoke.
The noise was loud enough to shake my house.

What was this?

That was a LORAM Rail Grinder which is working the north side commuter rail territory right now.

Wonder haow many trcak side fires it creates on occasion,

the links dont' work, and im sure it has created a ton of fires, but they have tanker cars on the train, its a good thing they are doing all this grinding now during the winter instead of the summer

the railgrinder just finished doing the NEC between Boston and Westerly, RI from what i understand, i got a pic of it last week in the Amtrak MOW yard in Providence

the water dripping from the end of the train is a water cannon for extinguishing trackside fires. It is a remote controlled water cannon that can shoot about 100 feet, with what appears to be a real strong stream.

I just found out, the Rail Grinder is NOT working the Reading/Haverhill line tonight (3/8/07) as planned. Will work Friday night instead. Stored at BET tonight.

Loram was working the Newburyport line this morning....I watched it work through Ipswich between 1245 and 0115 this morning....It's quite a sight to see at night....missed the return trip back through though....I was told it came back through around 0300

Rail Grinder IS working tonight out of Wilmington.
Will finish the Wildcat and Lowell line, then put up in Boston at BET.
Doesn't work Saturday. Sunday morning it gets delivered to CSX/Beacon
Park and heads west to Chicago.

Does anyone have a schedule for the rail grinding?
