#798 runs down the Fairmount Line. How could it go through Ruggles?

Last time I rode 798(Friday) It went along the NEC from Readville to Boston. They have been doing that for quite awhile now.

#798 no longer appears on the Fairmount schedule, though it is still marked as Fairmount on the Franklin schedule.

Oddly it still is on the Franklin line but I will say that when I was south and worked that train and the other Norwood inbound via fairmount line we were sometimes told to run the corridor depending on traffic.

One of the Sperry cars (SRS 125) is working on the Fitchburg line in West Cambridge today. It has crossed Sherman St. three times so far this morning, on the inbound (southerly) track. There's a white MBCR pickup truck parked on the ROW just off the street...I'm not sure if they're triggering the crossing signals or not?

This deadhead ran through Talbot Ave at 3:51pm today - the third northbound deadhead in half an hour. It's a bit hard to see, but this is an 8-car set, with two flats and 6 bilevels. I though there was only one of these sets, and that it stayed on the Worcester Line.

There are multiple sets that have 8 coaches. If Southampton Street fills up they store sets at Readville during the day.

The 8 car set you're refering to is usually a 8 car set with 7 K-cars and 600 series car that makes up P508/P523. Recently the cab K-car and the 600 series car have been replaced by MBB cars(terrible choice since this has seriously reduced the number of seats on an already packed train).

That said, as of friday, it seems that train that you saw deadheading was the train that now makes up P508/P523. It's a slight improvement, since the non MBB flats offer a little more in the way of seats. What they really need to do is have an 8 K-car set, but for whatever reason that never happens.

Southampton and readville are both filled up daily after the morning rush, the only thing that changes sometimes is what equipment goes to which yard.

They do have full 8K sets, they save them for the Providence Line. They may not have 8 K-Cars together in a train every single day but they do use 8-Car trains of all K-Cars very often.

I know, sometimes when the regular Worcester express set dies they give us one as a replacement and everyone is happy about it. I always thought the 7 k-car one flat consist was kind of unusual.

Isn't the Worcester express set usually one hauled by our "brand new" locomotives???

I haven't seen either 010 or 011 hauling the express in about a year. They sometimes show up in the Worcester yard hauling one of the locals though.

It would be nice to see them put back though. They had a slight acceleration advantage over the usual F40s that are usually hauling it. On a heavy train like that, you need all the power you can get.

Work engine #3247, three hoppers full of gravel, and the orange caboose just passed West Cambridge, heading outbound. [~11AM]

UPDATE: Just returned heading inbound ~11:20, so I guess they didn't go all the way to Fitchburg!

A tamper crew was setting up to work the section of new track between West Acton center and Idlewyld farms. Figured the gravel was meant for them. However, if the train came back in 20 minutes then I would say not.
Trains don't run on schedules, son. They run on tracks.
