New cars

Postby Head-end View » Mon Aug 07, 2006 12:42 am

Have any new Blue-Line cars been delivered yet? If not, when are they expected to start arriving? I'm from Long Island, considering a trip up there this fall. :-)

Hopefully early 2007. That's what they told me. Also, did you get to see out front of the 0600s? They got a huge window for us to see, and the new 0700s will have the railfan window too.

Front window

Postby Head-end View » Mon Aug 07, 2006 8:44 pm

Thanks Rob. Yes, I have ridden the Blue Line out to Wonderland, and it is a good view. Though it always annoyed me that you had to use another token to get back on for the return trip, same as Lechmere if I remember right. And are you sure the new trains will have a railfan window too? That's becoming the exception nowadays. I'm eagerly waiting to see how the new PATH cars in New York turn out.

Was at the heights and saw the carcuses of the 16 cars to be scrapped. There was 3 duces in front of the shop abd a track in the yard with the line of the 10 surrounded by their replacements. Reminds me of when the #4 cars were being placed into service and seeing the Pullman's and St Louies as carcuses. Funny how history repeats itself. :(

Yeah I know, Stevie, I also liked the Hawker Siddeley units, they also reminded me of when the Redbirds (R33/R36) of the IRT were being retired the same way as more and moew R142/R142A/R142S units were coming and coming. But here, the other part of the 0600s I will miss the most is the view out front and the leather seats. The new 0700s, have no view or little view out front, and the seats are of course slippery, but I've managed them well. Next time I get an 0600, I will post it here. Also, one may want to start getting photos of them too...

If you miss the 0600s, come down to New York and ride the PATH PA3s, the cars they were based on. They were also built by Hawker Siddeley but date from 1972. They are the 724-769 series and are also due for retirement with new PA5s, but will last for another few years.

Since my friend continues to chain smoke nonstop, she is probably an Alco.

Yeah, that's because that 0700 railfan window did not have an ad then, now just about all have an ad in the non-curtain window like many of the Red Line 1993/94 built 01800s.

Oh yeah R36 Combine Coach, I remember those 1972-74 Hawker PATH Cars, they are just like the 0600s, and heck, maybe the remaining 20 0600 Blue Line cars here could be used for PATH revenue service, they are 48' 6" in length, 3 feet shorter than the PATH units, they may need them for extra service rather than us here in Blue Line Country.

The PA3s are interesting cars, based directly on the 1965 St. Louis PA1s. Other differences between the PA3s and 0600s/01200s are that the PA3s are aluminum and are WE, the MBTA cars are GE.

Is there plans to save a 0600 set for Seashore?

Yes, 0622 and 0623 are the cars Seashore is looking to acquire. This pair was sent out to see it was feasible to rebuild/modify the cars for operation on the Orange Line. These cars were torn apart and totally rebuilt.

And hopefully they'll be in operational condition like the 9327 and 37371 which I rode last year, I'd like to ride those 0600s again post revenue lives

I actually never been on a 0600, but I do enjoy the Orange Line's similar cars.
