McTed: Good Blue Line car pictures! Where is Siemens constructing them? Will the car #s be again in the 0600 series? They have always reminded me of PATH cars with pantographs-BUT-the roof bulge more than likely NOT fit the clearance of PATHs former H&M tunnels - but in the section between JSQ and NWK just west of the Hackensack River bridge there is a mile-long or so section with de-energized catenary. What will become of the 1979 0600s? Will any be saved in any way-or will the new cars be added to the existing fleet and just maybe that talked-about Lynn extension could come to pass? I think the new ones look pretty good myself. MACTRAXX

Will the car #s be again in the 0600 series?

Definitely Nope.

They will be numbered 0700-0793 = 94 units

Since the 0600 range will be reserved for the current cars which will run tandem with these 0700s, at least a fraction of the 0600s.

From what i understand they are keeping an alotment of so many Hawkers I think 10. I know MCTed mentioned keeping a few. TTA of America in Hornel NY is the location of the construction of the cars in the US.

Yes the new #5 cars will be numbered starting with 0700

Yes they are being assemble by TTA and their plant is located in karona [spelling?] New york.

As for the #4 Hawker Siddelely cars we have to keep, the lease currently calls for 18 to remain on the poperty until 2012 and we'll probably keep at least an additional deuce as a spare making the total 20. But belive it or not this plan is not carved in stone and it may change at some point and we'll may scrap the entire #4 car fleet.

There are a number of reason the new cars will be delivered by truck and most of what has been stated here is correct.

The #5 car will be delivered by truck.

If the rapid transit cars were to transported by rail they would have to be loaded on a flat bed car before shipment, because the gearboxes and motors could not take the long haul being horsed.

Another reason I belive for the trucks is the volume they are delivered which is going to be something like four cars a month once delivery and acceptance begins.

RP-My mistake on the Blue Line #s. If they were higher than 01000-or 5 digits-they can be "added"on to. There will be 93 cars-and as mentioned some HS cars will stay-a good sign. They are being built at the old M-K plant in Hornell,NY and nearby is a town called Savona. I looked at TTAs website myself and was somewhat impressed with what rail equipment that they were working on. I failed to ask about any west extension past Bowdoin-will that ever happen? As for extensions the proposed extension to Lynn makes much more sense. MACTRAXX

What is this lease that we speak of and why does it mandate the T to keep the #4 cars in service through 2012?

Rode on the Blue Line today 3 times, and the cars are in "okay" conditon from what I saw. Rust on alot of them on the outsides.. and in need of a paint job very soon. But they are still running, from Point A to Point B. One positve note, the AC in those things (if they have it) worked wonderful! :-D

Well, try to save some for Seashore Trolley, and maybe for other uses.

The Museum Subway Curator is looking at 0622/23 for obvious reasons.

The T leases the cars which is supposed to help financially, think all vehicle aquisitions are now done this way.

Funny thing, if the lease ends when it does, does the financing part (bank, whoever) take back old subway equipment? Does it go up for auction, and sold to a 'mom and pop' subway?

I know that sounds kinda strange, but what is a bank going to do with specially designed subway cars?

I could see a disel loco etc, it could be used really anywhere, but the good ole 600's, i dunno!

It's probably a least-to-own type of scenario. At the end of the term they can either buy the remaining value or lose them I guess? I'm not sure who would want to lease the things, it's not like they are standard equipment that would be easy to sell to another transit line.

Looking over my 1800 student manual the controler is simular but the red line car controller has where the master key is inserted. 3 position instead of 2 like the 0700 on and off. They have OFF, RUN, AUTO and where the handle release is the 1800 have an OVERTRAVEL button. Just thought that was intresting. The 1800 can run them selves if there programed properly.
