There is a confirmed fatality on the Eastern Route this evening. Train 124 struck and killed an 11-year-old child (conflicting reports of boy vs girl) at Castle Hill. At this time, no word on what they were doing at that location.

According to WBZ-TV, they were playing on the tracks, and the accident occurred 3 minutes after leaving Salem station. Passengers were transferred to bus(es).

Wow, that is just awful.

Two fatalities on the Eastern so far this month.

After the first one I noticed a significant increase of the use of horns including in designated quiet areas where they never usually sound the horns. They have been blowing them entering and exiting stations, passing other trains, exciting the Salem Tunnel and what not.

The latest report is that the 11 year old boy was crossing the tracks to get his bike. A train had just passed and he never saw the second one coming from the other direction.

One thing that irks me is when ever they interview people in the neighborhood after events like this they always blame the trains, that they are inherently dangerous and say more needs to be done for safety. I'm pretty sure this area is fenced off / has no trespassing signs along the tracks already.

You could fly a drone above every train, with regular and night-vision cameras to detect crossing incursions and trespassers.

Had train crews previously seen kids in the area? Did parents/neighbors know where their kids were playing? How about the local cops? Were fences cut & left unrepaired for a long time?

Wow what a bad day. If my count is correct, it's 21 trains late and only 4 on time right now (7:15 PM).

Could be due to temporary heat-related speed restrictions during the rush hour. Amtrak's southbound Vermonter was 1 hour late into Brattleboro today due to speed restrictions, so it seems.

hmm

Possible. Are some lines more effected than others? For example, I took the 5:30 Rockport Express which departed North Station at 6:10 and we didn't appear to be going any slower than usual.

It sure seemed like most of the reports (northside) with reasons were citing mechanical problems. A good chunk of the short-turns (any train in the x8x or x9x number series up north) was cancelled last night, as well as Tuesday morning's Littleton turn. Standard operating practice when they're short of enough sets to run rush hour.
Wondering if I'll see the Haverhill double-tracking finished before I retire...

Oh, and the morning commute on the Providence Line also turned into a raging dumpster fire:

Glad I took the earlier train this morning. The tail end of the rush hour commute is seeing delays of 20 to 30 minutes due to "late arrival of equipment/outbound train".

A sure sign they're down at least a few sets up north today...

Someones lost again tonight
Haverhill Train 213 (4:30 pm outbound) is operating 10-20 minutes late between Ballardvale and Wachusett due to train traffic.
