Mansfield and Attleboro short-turns

Postby MBTA3247 » Thu Mar 17, 2016 8:40 am

How do train pairs 841/842 and 843/844 (the Mansfield and Attleboro short-turns) normally change ends and tracks? Do they arrive at their endpoints on the normal outbound track and then continue south to the nearest crossover before changing ends and returning on the inbound track, arrive and depart from the outbound platform (crossing over on the inbound run), or cross over before reaching the station and arriving and departing from the inbound track?
"The destination of this train is [BEEP BEEP]" -announcement on an Ashmont train.

Depends on the Mainline Dispatchers mood and traffic on the territory for those two jobs

For 841/842, if all goes well (can be a challenge...):
841 makes its outbound stop at Mansfield at 0708, then proceeds south on Track 1 past the MANS interlocking, the engineer changes ends, and stays. Meanwhile, Amtrak 66 usually blows by on Track 2 around 0715. After the block is clear, 842 proceeds to cross over from Track 1 to Track 2 and arrives at Mansfield to make its inbound pick-up in time for the 0726 departure.

Was in a rush out the door earlier...What Diverging Route typed is the usual move for 841/842 when all is going peachy. Once in a while there will be an odd ball move where they will just skip the station, pull WEST of MANSFIELD INT. and then the Cond. pipes the engineer back into the station to change ends (once in a while)

As for 843/844, it all depends on how 812 is running. If 812 is on time or 1-3 mins late, they will hold at HOLDEN on TRK 1, wait for 812 to clear, and then proceed up Track 4 into Attleboro station to change ends. If 812 is more than 4 mins late, 843 will discharge passengers on Track 3 and run down to HEBRONVILLE and back into track 4 to change ends...this move is done due to AMTK 171 being almost up 843's behind and Mainline Dspr. doesn't like to delay any Amtrak trains
