So what's up with these MBB cab cars coming out of retirement lately? NETransit has 1520 now roaming around again. Are we really still that short on Kawasaki and Rotem cab cars?

Probably fill-in's, in part, for the Kawasaki overhaul program and Rotem/Kawasaki PTC installation program.

Just out of curiosity, how long have the Retired MBB's been out of service before they were put back into service? And did they have to pass any type of inspections such as the 4 year inspections to do so?

Most of them have been OOS for 2 years. The cab cars were all expired on inspections.


Cab shortage right this moment is indeed dire enough to have to dip into the stored reserves. 1812, 1813, 1819, 1722 (rebuild), 1635, and 1528 are all OOS for carbody repairs...with that number doubling over the last month. That's screwing up the K-car rebuilds because they can't pull any of the final 3 unrebuilt 17xx cabs from service to send to the program, and it's affecting the pace of the PTC installs.

Looks like 1528 is getting repairs in house according to NETransit?

Was this a retired unit as well? Possible another MBB may be coming out of the woodworks soon.

1528 has been the specially decorated veteran's memorial cab car for some time so it's probably been in service fairly recently.

The 1528 had been in storage in Yard 14 BET for a while, though it was moved into BET recently.

Just saw this listed on NETransit

At Seaview-prepare for lease to ConnDOT: (12 500s and 4 1500s may be leased long-term to ConnDOT)



I'm guessing this is for use in the State of Connecticut rather than the Connecticut River Line Shuttle?

All of the seats are capable of flipping (save probably for a busted seat here or there). The cars that had the seats disabled just had the release pedal disconnected. It’s still possible to release and flip them.

As I typed this I remembered about some of the overhauls with bombardier style seats. Obviously, those cars aren’t flippable.

Hartford Line startup. And maybe only a protect fleet at that, because they have a slight excess of Mafersa coaches for current Shore Line East's fleet requirements and the Hartford Line's Year 1 starter schedule is very meager on account of the 3 infill stations (North Haven, West Hartford, Enfield) not yet breaking ground. Lease would not need to last longer than 12-16 months, because the supplemental order of 60 (option-expandable to 94) M8's starts delivery from Kawasaki in mid-2019. SLE's car requirements are estimated at 24 M8's so the numbers for retiring the protect-duty M2's and amassing the SLE extras would all come in the first half of that order's delivery, freeing up all active Mafersas for reassignment.
