One of the Gensets OOS?

Postby mdamico23 » Tue Apr 09, 2013 3:54 pm

Hi Folks,
While riding by the BET on the outbound Fitchburg train on 4/9, I observed one of the MBTA's Genset work engines parked outside with a big blue tarp over the roof in the middle part of the hood. Not sure if the Gensets have turbochargers, but this would be the location of the turbo on 'conventional' diesels. Wondering if it blew a turbo or some sort of other ailment? Does BET have the capability to fix a blown turbo or would it have to be sent offline such as P+W or Pan Am?
Thanks and have a great night..

It has been OOS since it arrived on the property lol but seriously has to have been close to a year by now... The gensets have 3 small engines and where you see the tarp is where the middle one has been removed. I don't know what the issue was but herd the T was having a problem getting the necessary parts for repair.

I don't think the T bothered buying a spare engine-generator skid for the gensets. So naturally, instead of being OOS for an hour or two while the skid gets swapped out, they end up OOS for weeks at a time.

It's been siting inside on PM2 for months, which is why no one has noticed it.
