Boston Type 4 Streetcar Wheelchair Accessible (?)

Postby bostonstreetcarguy » Mon Feb 11, 2013 3:02 pm

Hi! I'm wondering how would you make a old Boston elevated railway type 4 wheelchair accessible. I was thinking you could remove the interior step some how but I don't know how to do that. If you have any ideas please post!!

No Type 4s survived the scrapper's torch, so I assume the question is idle curiosity...

At any case, there were many barriers to surmount. Floor height at the vestibule was 30 inches, and then from the vestibule into the car itself there was another 10 inch step. The door with inside the outward-folding door leaves was 4' 6 3/4", and there was a center post in the middle of the opening.

So basically, it would have been impossible without major re-engineering, and in that era, such provisions were simply not considered.

...and if you were so fortunate as to find a remaining 4, it would be tantamount to capitol murder to "modernize" it in such a fashion. :-(

Isn't Center Entrance car #6270 at Seashore a Type 4?

No. There are NO Type 4s anywhere. Center Entrance Cars did not get a Type number.
