State audit reveals $100 million+ discrepancy for the T

Funny that it mentions using "state of the art" software, and yet I find the attached picture posted on Twitter today (courtesy of @abx21)...a typical scene I encounter. The fare gates get better "vacations" than I do!

I was hoping the discrepancy would be in the T's favor, but knew in my heart better than that.

Remember...everything's all the fault of rear-door "fare evaders". No need to be asking any uncomfortable questions. Nope. None at all.

When there is $100 million less collected than the system says passed through, this isn't fare evasion. Fare evaders or uncollected fares wouldn't show on the machine totals at all. I have to think one or more insiders has been industriously shorting the collection from the boxes for (probably more than) five years so far.

madness. the howling over fare increases to cover a $160mil shortfall when receipt data versus cash collections are off by $100million+. what is one to believe? i read all sorts of support for mbta in these blogs like how the ridership is increasing and farebox recovery is near 80%. rubbish. small wonder the cash collection is done in a 'secret' room. can we ever rid our state of hackerama sickness? we certainly pay enough to get smart people. ken patrick
