VRE to discuss Midday Storage Facility at Community Meeting

Postby davinp » Thu Feb 02, 2017 7:52 am

VRE is searching for a new midday storage facility as Ivy City is too small and Amtrak wants it back. Unfortunately, options are limited.

The public is invited to participate in the first community meeting for the Virginia Railway Express Midday Storage Facility project.

The purpose of the VRE Midday Storage Facility project is to replace the current storage space leased from Amtrak at the Ivy City Coach Yard in the District of Columbia. The project will include planning, designing, and constructing a permanent midday storage facility for VRE trains that travel to the District. The proposed facility will be used to store commuter trains on weekdays, between the inbound morning commute and the outbound afternoon commute. VRE will work with members of the community, stakeholders, and property owners to assess potential impacts and determine ways VRE can be a good neighbor. Please visit the VRE Midday Storage Facility project website for additional information at: www.vre.org/development/midday-storage-facility/

VRE encourages the public to attend this community meeting to learn more about the project and provide their input on the facility.

The meeting will take place as follows:

February 16, 2017

4:00 PM to 7:30 PM (Presentations at 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm)

at

Bethesda Baptist Church 1808 Capitol Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002

Solution.

Acquire an area of the land in what use to be the Baltimore & Ohio Ekington yard adjacent to WMATA Brentwood Yard and the Rhode Island Avenue Metrorail station. Access to the storage facility would be made from the west leg of the Washington Terminal turning Y and a diamond crossing of the CSX Washington Terminal lead south of QN.

VRE could make a deal with MARC for the propose of making a it a shared facility.

Maybe, but depends on who owns the strip of land west of the track from the Brentwood WMATA rail yard to past QN Tower. You also have to contend with the Metropolitan Branch Trail as well, which will get you some flack with pedestrians.

Here's the area: http://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=38.92 ... 6&z=16&m=b

I want to say CSX may have this land, but that's SWAG research (stupid wild-ass guessing).

Edit: Also, just one track to go from CSX to Amtrak south of QN?!? WTF?!? No wonders why you can't do more than rush hour, rush direction on the Brunswick line.
I ride the (MTA Maryland) Penn Line (between Odenton and Baltimore). I used to work for MTA Maryland's IT department, and out of professional courtesy my responses may be limited. Wikimapia is wonderful (for track/interlocking locations)!

The storage facility would be on the land between the Metropolitan Branch Trail and the CSX tracks. there is enough room under the pedestrian bridge from the trail the Rhode Island Metrorail station for 2 tracks. Between the trail and Brentwood Yard there is room for at least 8 tracks.

I believe the property belongs to the District of Columbia Department of Public Works. Much of what is there today use to be located on part of the block in front of the New York Avenue Metrorail station. The area that DC is using to the north could be relocated on the unused property south of R Street.
