VRE advancing Crystal City expansion ahead of Amazon vote

Postby davinp » Thu Mar 14, 2019 9:07 am

Virginia Railway Express is moving forward with plans to build an expanded Crystal City Station, a key step needed to expand and improve service.

The VRE Operations Board is due to vote Friday to allow contracting to move forward for engineering work based on the already approved concept design.

Separately, the Arlington County Board is set to vote Saturday to approve an incentive package for Amazon on top of existing business tax breaks.

Today, there is only one platform that is about half the length of current trains even though Crystal City is one of VRE’s busiest stations. The single platform can only accommodate 5 cars, but VRE runs 8 car trains

Don't be suprised if Amazon walks away after the Incentive package is approved. they seem to be VERY picky! :( :(

Neither Northam, local congresscritter Beyer, nor the Arlington County Board seem particularly unhappy with Amazon - especially since with NYC bailing, that means more offices in Northern Virginia. Probably some spillover into Alexandria City too, on the old RF&P/PRR Potomac Yard. Bezos is also a well-known employer in the area already with the Post and Whole Foods.
