Given the price tags being thrown around, and given that the DE/DM fleet can't even be used on any of this, here's a novel idea:

Electrify the whole LIRR before building all of these projects, which are useless to everyone on the east end right now. Really, when you're talking about buying substations in bulk, and laying down major amounts of third rail, it's gonna be cheaper than a piecemeal approach, and anyway, it's not like cost is an issue when we're talking about MULTIPLE 5 - 10 billion dollar projects right now...

At least get the LIRR to a point where every line can use this stuff, and riders will get a near immediate improvement in service.

And, once these things are done, look hard at redoing Jamacia into a more rational layout that can support running trains through at higher speeds. Right now, it's a BIG slowdown point for everyone.

The idea from wacky pataki is not going to happen in the nere future. look at the east side access projct, it shoulda been done by now. I wonder decades the "lower mannhattan access" projct will take.
also they really have no choice any more to not dubble track out to KO. they waited way to many years for that, but yet they come up with this new bull s#$%. most of us railfans have more practality for the RR then the state. we rail fans will "make the trains run on time"...

Y take another multi trillion$$ project in hand when you still have the other one nowhere near done.

Logic Is Really Required

What train is he proposing to run into downtown, anyway? He talks about a one-seat ride to JFK-- is it going to be Airtrain and LIRR both? On the same tracks, or what?

LIRR to lower Manhattan

Postby LIRR272 » Thu May 06, 2004 9:36 pm

I don't understand why there is any discussion on this. For one it doesn't make sense since at Flatbush less than 10ft. away are major subway trains to lower Manhattan that stop within a block of each other.

Second, there would be major construction to the Brook interlocking to accomodate this. For example, a train leaving Nostrand Ave toward Flatbush would have to go below the entire system (subway & LIRR tracks) to link up with proposed tunnel since the 2,3,4, & 5 subway staion is at the same grade as the LIRR. The Pacific Street station is below.

Third is would be nightmare operations for the LIRR to get the trains into lower Manhattan and then get them out. Where will the extra trains be stored? Where will the yard be?

Its a shame that after 9/11 all this talk of redoing the transportation network of lower Manhattan is surfacing when for so many years the system was fine. No complaints etc.

I didnt realize it was an election year for Patquirki. The good governor hasn't made promises like this since the last time he ran. Good to see all the modern freight cars making their way around the LIRR. Double-Stacks, High Boxcars, Car carriers, etc. all made possible by the major capital improvements Pataki prmoised durning his last campaign... :P

the LIRR would have to have a maby 4 track platform @ the old WTC site then loop north to the west side yard and stop/ terminate at penn, or continue on back to jamaica. a western loop. tho Y would they do that if they have the estertern loops off the map (mineola_clp-wh & farock-rockawaybeach branch > woodside)

read the plan again its not about LIRR being extended but the Airtrain.
LIRR passengers would need to transfer to the unmanned toy choo choo
