Westhampton Air Base

Hi. I'm curious if Westhampton AFB ever was linked to the LIRR via a spur, and if not how did the LIST store MP54s there?

A siding (new 1952 per Emery) for fuel tank car delivery (7 tank car connections) near MP75.

Not sure this helps. LIST had MP54s stored there, or? Please explain. Thanks.

Back in the 70s LIST preserved like 10 MU cars, including the 200. They bounced around the system, coming to Westhampton and Mitchell Field before making it to Riverhead.

The LIST cars, which were preserved mainly through the efforts of Bob Sturm and Win Boerkel were originally stored at Howell's siding in Babylon. A developer bought adjacent land to build a strip of stores and (through his elected representative) complained that the cars were an eyesore which would hurt him financially. Their windows were boarded with warping Masonite and anyone other than a railfan would probably agree.

The Railroad did agree and removed them. One place available where the decrepit rolling stock wouldn't bother anyone and remain somewhat free from vandals and looters was Westhampton AFB. They were stored there for several years.

It’s a little far out, but with the significant amount of land it would be a good place for a rail served industrial park. It seems each year a few manufacturers and warehouses continue to move onto the property out there.
