Completely Random Question

Postby cam36 » Fri May 18, 2018 7:34 pm

If you lined up every M7 in the LIRRs rolling stock from end to end starting at West Side Yard, how far east would it stretch?

To build on that, if you lined up every unit that is currently in service, from the same starting point would it reach to the end of the line?

Dumb question, but could be a fun fact :P

CAM:

The LIRR has 836 M7 cars (7001-7836).

Each car is 85 feet long - a married pair is 170 feet long.

A mile is 5280 feet.

418(pairs) times 170 equals 71060 feet long.

71060 divided by 5280 equals 13.458 or almost 13 1/2 miles long if all 836 cars were coupled
up end to end. A substantial distance that would equal Penn Station to someplace east of the
Hillside Facility if they were all placed there in a solid line.

LOL. Cabin fever? (LI and NY metro area seems to be in an endless stretch of cool, dreary weather.) Thanks for making me smile!

Upon the threat of Hurricane Sandy, the railroad emptied West Side Yard and other low lying yards such as Long Beach and staged the equipment on Mainline #1 adjacent to Woodside station. The line spanned from Woodside to the Connecting RR overpass. I remember counting 74 cars in total which would be 6,290 feet in length.
