March 16, 2018, 4 alarm fire near Hillside

Postby bellstbarn » Fri Mar 16, 2018 3:19 pm

About 3:40 p.m. today, I saw a diesel train of maybe 4 cars race eastbound through Massapequa Park, followed by a longer diesel train within a few minutes. A service announcement on the web said that Train 2772, which usually stops at Mineola and picks up a crowd, was detoured because of a 4-alarm fire north of the tracks at Hillside. That fire hurt service on 4 branches. I suspect 2772 was the shorter train, but I cannot identify the train that chased it! Any other theory about which two trains I saw?

The LIRR added some extra diesel trains on a roundabout route via the Montauk from Jamaica to Babylon, which then switched direction back to Hicksville. Some Port Jeff trains also ran via that route and switched direction again at Hicksville.
Welcome to New York Penn Station. You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.
