Greenport trains bypassing Riverhead due to Broken Rail

Postby pineywoodsman » Tue Nov 21, 2017 4:32 am

On Monday.
They must've used one of the other tracks through Riverhead (Museum?) that cant access the platform. Can't remember the last time that happened. Link to tweet.

On their Facebook
Westbound customers traveling from Greenport to Ronkonkoma can expect normal train service Monday morning, with the exception of Riverhead. Trains will bypass Riverhead due to a broken rail near the station. Riverhead customers will be accommodated by bus service to Ronkonkoma, for westbound train service to Penn.
Westbound customers whose destination is Riverhead please note: Any customers boarding at Greenport, Southold or Mattituck who are traveling to Riverhead must take a westbound train to Yaphank, then transfer to an eastbound bus to Riverhead.
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

The real issue here in fact is LIRRs dangerously foolish decisions and ultimate failure to include traps on the C3s.
Had that provision be included and thus provided for LIIRR would be able to properly fulfill the schedule by clearing the main and not needing to turn in yard limits, the proclaimed “magical place”.

However related to this situation, passengers could have been boarded and alighted from the siding across the main track (with flag protection of course) as per LIRR rule 107 which surprisingly survived and was not short sightedly removed.

Nothings dangerous about this.
I fact envision the a wooden section filing the tracks at one far end of Riverhead station. And not being fully fenced in.
This would be the low platform section for the above stated purpose in addition to proving over flow for longer consist.

This is railroad decisions here not politically based. It may offend some so I’m sorry in advance to the snowflakes and lawyers.
